Santiago Ramos Mingo joins América from Brazil to fill Sebastián Cáceres' spot

The 24-year-old Argentine defender said the club's stature and the front office's genuine interest were decisive in his decision.

Santiago Ramos Mingo joins América from Brazil to fill Sebastián Cáceres' spot

A flight from Brazil, a suitcase, and the heaviest jersey in Mexico waiting for him in Coapa. That's how Santiago Ramos Mingo arrived in Mexico City, the Argentine defender América signed to reinforce its back line, and he wasted no time making clear the real reason he took on the challenge.

The 24-year-old center back arrives from Brazil's Bahía and is set to fill the void left by Sebastián Cáceres, who departed for Celta de Vigo. Stepping in to cover that loss is no small task, but Ramos Mingo didn't hold back about what it means to him to wear the yellow and blue.

Very happy and very eager to start this new chapter in my life, and glad to be joining the biggest club in MexicoSantiago Ramos Mingo

What stood out is that the Argentine didn't just talk about the club's domestic prestige. He insisted that América's name carries weight beyond Mexico's borders, and that this was part of what shaped his decision, along with something that often matters just as much as the badge: the front office's genuine interest in bringing him in.

Everyone around the world knows América, they know the magnitude of this club, and what brought me here the most was the club's project and its interest in me. I'm grateful for thatSantiago Ramos Mingo

And that's the key, beyond the marketing: when a club of that size comes calling, according to the defender himself, the decision makes itself.

When a club of this magnitude calls you, there's nothing to think aboutSantiago Ramos Mingo

What he already knows about Almada's style

Beyond the pleasantries of a first welcome, Ramos Mingo also offered an early, if cautious, read on what awaits him under Guillermo Almada. He mentioned high pressing and clean buildup from the back, two traits that define the Uruguayan coach's approach and that, for a center back, change quite a bit about how you read a match.

The defender acknowledged there's still work ahead before he can fully settle into the team's rhythm: getting to know his teammates, understanding Almada's concepts on the field, and only then drawing conclusions about how he'll perform within the system.

I know he plays with high pressing, that he likes to build out from the back. First I want to get to know my teammates, get to know him, and then see how everything goesSantiago Ramos Mingo

With Cáceres gone, Las Águilas' back line needed a replacement with real standing, and in Coapa they bet on a young defender with experience in Brazilian soccer and an obvious hunger to earn his place. Now it's a matter of waiting to see how he fits into Almada's setup and how much he can contribute in an area América needs to strengthen heading into what's ahead.
