Santiago Rodriguez scores twice in Botafogo's 3-2 loss to Athletico Paranaense
The Uruguayan came off the bench with his team down 3-0 and salvaged some pride on an afternoon to forget.

With the match all but decided and the scoreboard working against them, Santiago Rodriguez brought a measure of dignity to an afternoon Botafogo would rather forget. The Uruguayan came off the bench with his side already down 3-0, and in under twenty minutes he showed the entire Nilton Santos crowd exactly why he was brought in.
The final result was a 3-2 loss to Athletico Paranaense in matchday 24 of the Brasileirao, but the story of the game shifted the moment Rodriguez stepped onto the field. He entered in the 75th minute, with the Rio de Janeiro side sunk and without answers, and in the 85th minute he struck from outside the box with a shot that left the opposing keeper no chance. The ball flew in like an arrow and, in an instant, gave new life to a Nilton Santos crowd that had already resigned itself to defeat.
There was still more to come. Deep into stoppage time, in the 92nd minute, the former Nacional man was again in the right place. He pounced on a rebound after a corner kick and made no mistake, finishing with sharp instincts to make it 3-2 and spark, if only for a few minutes, hope of an equalizer that ultimately never arrived.
A double that couldn't prevent the slide in the standings
Rodriguez's late double stood as a small consolation on a bitter afternoon. Botafogo couldn't extend the comeback all the way to the final whistle and ended up losing by the very margin he himself had narrowed. The defeat also hurts in the standings: the Rio de Janeiro club dropped to 11th place in the Brasileirao, far from the positions its name and history usually demand.
Still, for the black and white faithful there was something to hold onto amid the disappointment. Rodriguez, who arrived from Uruguay with a reputation as a dribbler with a fine touch, showed in just a few minutes exactly what's expected of an impact substitute: showing up when the game seems lost and leaving a mark even when the result doesn't follow. He didn't change the final score, but he did send a clear signal that he can be an important piece going forward.
