Schalke and Elversberg Play to Scoreless Draw Despite Hitting the Woodwork

At VELTINS-Arena, both sides created scoring chances but couldn't finish them, leaving a goalless draw that barely shifts their Bundesliga standings.

Schalke and Elversberg Play to Scoreless Draw Despite Hitting the Woodwork

Edin Dzeko tested Nikolai Rehnen early on, though really it was the crossbar and some sharp positioning from the visitors that did the testing, and still the scoreboard never budged. FC Schalke 04 and SV 07 Elversberg played to a 0-0 draw at VELTINS-Arena in a Bundesliga match that had more chances than goals, leaving both sides with the sense that something got left on the table.

The hosts came out looking to set the terms early. Before the quarter-hour mark, Dzeko had already forced two shots, one of them a header that missed narrowly after a corner delivery from Adil Aouchiche. Elversberg answered through Noah Darvich, whose left-footed effort clipped the crossbar in the 12th minute. It was an end-to-end first half with chances shared around: Kenan Karaman and Satoshi Tanaka also gave Schalke's attack a look, while Felix Keidel and Cole Campbell kept the visitors' response alive before the break.

The second half followed much the same script. Nikola Katic came close to putting Schalke in front in the 53rd minute with a shot that skimmed the crossbar after an assist from Aouchiche off a free kick, and minutes later Lukas Petkov and Lukas Pinckert threatened for Elversberg almost simultaneously in a scramble of rebounds inside the box that no goalkeeper could claim. With the second half well underway, the substitutions (Moussa Sylla and Max Wober coming on for Schalke, Maurice Krattenmacher and Luca Sirch for Elversberg) tried to inject fresh legs without tipping the balance. Hasan Kurucay picked up a yellow card in the 61st minute for dangerous play, and the match wound down through a closing stretch of fouls and half-chances that never quite sharpened into anything clear, until Junior Dina Ebimbe had the last look in stoppage time but couldn't finish it off.

What the Numbers Say

Elversberg controlled the ball more, but Schalke had no shortage of attacking answers despite seeing less of it.

It's striking that with 13 and 11 shots respectively, only one from each side ended up on target. Based on our estimate calculated from the location of those shots, Schalke generated 1.321 expected goals to Elversberg's 0.989, figures that point to a match that was even in terms of real danger, even if neither team managed to turn it into a goal.

Expectations vs. Reality

Heading into the match, we projected something with a bit more life to it: a 32% chance of a home win, 28% for a draw and 40% for Elversberg, with combined expected goals near 2.9. The result ended up being exactly the least likely of the three scenarios, and the scoreless draw stood in sharp contrast to the attacking output we anticipated before kickoff.

What the Point Means

With this draw, Schalke 04 sit at 5 points through four matches, with a record of one win, two draws and one loss. Elversberg have 7 points from the same number of matches, with two wins, one draw and one loss, and a goal difference of +1. The gap between the two clubs in the standings is just 2 points, a margin that makes clear today's result doesn't change much of the picture for either side so far in the Bundesliga.
