Seattle Sounders Crash Into the Posts as Montreal Escapes With a Draw

Despite dominating with 63% possession and 18 shots, the Seattle Sounders couldn't get past a 1-1 draw against a CF Montreal side that held firm until the final whistle.

Seattle Sounders Crash Into the Posts as Montreal Escapes With a Draw

The Seattle Sounders FC ran into a counterattack before they could even get a handle on the game. Just 12 minutes in at Lumen Field, Hennadii Synchuk finished with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 1-0 for CF Montreal, assisted by Noah Streit off a quick break. The home side spent the rest of the match chasing the game, eventually salvaging a 1-1 draw that felt light given everything they created.

Montreal's early goal turned out to be the visitors' only real moment of danger in the first 45 minutes. Jordan Morris gave a warning in the 29th minute with a header that ended up in the goalkeeper's hands off a cross from Alex Roldan, and the Sounders kept piling up chances without reward while Montreal defended with fouls and long balls aimed at finding Alexis Sanchez and Fabian Herbers. With the score still 0-1, the first half closed with Seattle controlling the ball but finding no way through.

The push came in the second half, driven by the substitutions. With Sebastian Gomez and Kalani Kossa-Rienzi on the field from the start of the second period, the Sounders tightened the screws on Montreal's goal. Jordan Morris tried again in the 61st minute with a shot that drifted wide, and Dejan Joveljic also tested the visiting goalkeeper. The equalizer came in the 65th minute: Sebastian Gomez connected on a right-footed shot from the center of the box that slipped in on the right side of the goal for the final 1-1.

After the equalizer, the match turned into something close to an offensive monologue from Seattle. Morris rattled the left post in the 69th minute, Gomez kept pressing with several more chances, and even Cristian Roldan had one with his head deep into stoppage time. Montreal, for its part, gave one more scare with a shot from Wiki Carmona that struck the right post in the 88th minute, the final flash of danger in a match that ended with the Sounders pushing forward without reward.

The numbers behind a dominance that fell short

Seattle Sounders' territorial superiority showed up clearly in the match stats: more possession, more shots and more shots on target than their opponent.

The post-match xG calculated from the game's shots backs up that sense of incomplete dominance: 1.799 for Seattle Sounders against 1.218 for CF Montreal. The gap wasn't huge, but it was consistent with a home side that created more and better chances without turning it into a scoreboard advantage.

What the preview said

Before the match, our projection gave Seattle Sounders a 60% chance of winning, compared to 16% for CF Montreal and 24% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.90 for the home side and 0.89 for the visitors. The result ended up lining up more with the draw than with the win we projected as most likely: Seattle dominated as expected, but couldn't close out the match in its favor.

In the East group standings, CF Montreal sits in 15th place with 25 points from 30 games played (6 wins, 7 draws and 17 losses), a goal difference of -24 that paints a picture of a tough season. The point earned at Lumen Field doesn't change that outlook, but it does leave behind an image of resilience: the team weathered Seattle's offensive storm and walked away with a draw that, judging by the match stats, could have cost them much more.
