Seattle strikes twice in half an hour, then survives LAFC's onslaught to win 2-1

With just five shots to the visitors' 24, Seattle Sounders FC made the most of a two-minute burst of efficiency to beat a dominant LAFC side that pulled one back too late through Segura.

Seattle strikes twice in half an hour, then survives LAFC's onslaught to win 2-1

Fans had barely settled into their seats at Lumen Field when Albert Rusnak had already put the first goal on the board. In minute 0, off a pass from Cristian Roldan, the Slovak finished with his right foot from close range to make it 1-0. What followed was a study in contrasts: Seattle Sounders FC ended up winning 2-1 over Los Angeles Football Club, but the ball and the chances belonged, by a wide margin, to the team that walked away empty handed.

Because if this match proved anything, it was that paradox: Seattle struck twice in the first 30 minutes and then spent the rest of the game defending, while LAFC piled up attack after attack without reward until, too late, it finally broke through.

Two strikes, then holding on

The second goal came quickly, in minute 30: Sebastian Gomez, again set up by Rusnak, finished left footed from the right side of the box and curled it into the top corner to make it 2-0. That was the score at halftime, even though LAFC had already given a warning sign with shots from Denis Bouanga, Armindo Sieb and Son Heung-Min that failed to find the net.

In the second half, Seattle dropped back and LAFC kept pushing again and again: Bouanga, Son Heung-Min, Sieb and Mathieu Choiniere all tried their luck from inside and outside the box, but the shots kept crashing into defenders or flying wide. The breakthrough came in minute 80, when Eddie Segura connected with a header from close range, off a headed flick from Ryan Porteous that came from a cleared free kick, making it a final 2-1. There was no time for anything else, though LAFC kept trying until the end with corners and crosses into the box during stoppage time.

The numbers tell a different story

The stats confirm that the final score did not reflect how the match actually played out. LAFC controlled possession, created far more chances and finished with a lopsided edge in shots:

StatSeattle Sounders FCLos Angeles Football Club
Possession (%)39.260.8
Shots524
Shots on target28
Big chances13
Corners212
Passes370563
Fouls committed1515

That edge also shows up in the expected goals figure calculated after the fact based on shot location: 0.84 for Seattle against 2.71 for LAFC. In other words, our model suggests that based on the chances created, the visitors should have scored more than double the goals they actually managed. Seattle, with far less of the ball and far fewer chances, was more efficient exactly when it mattered: in the two minutes that decided the game.

The preview we published ahead of the match projected a tight contest, with a 33% chance of a home win, 30% for a draw and 37% for a road win, with expected goals of 1.21 for Seattle and 1.3 for LAFC. The final score, with two early goals from the home side and an LAFC unable to capitalize on its dominance, ended up tilting toward the less favored outcome in that projection.

What it means in the standings

The result carries weight in the Western Conference table. Before this match, LAFC sat sixth with 47 points and Seattle eighth with 46, separated by just 1 point. With the three points now in hand, Seattle jumps squarely into that fight for the top of the table, while LAFC is left with the feeling of having deserved far more than what the scoreboard ultimately showed.

In the end, the match came down to two minutes of efficiency from Seattle Sounders FC against nearly 90 minutes of fruitless pressure from Los Angeles Football Club, which found Segura's goal only when it was already too late to change the script.
