Sebastián Córdova suffers full ACL tear in left knee
The Mexican midfielder for Pumas got hurt during the Leagues Cup match against Columbus Crew and will undergo surgery in the coming days.

His knee buckled on the Cincinnati turf and everything changed in an instant. Sebastián Córdova put his hands to his face, then to the injured area, and could not continue. He was carried off on a stretcher, and what initially looked like just another scare was confirmed as one of the worst possible outcomes for Pumas.
The club announced that the Mexican midfielder suffered a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The team laid it out in a statement: "Club Universidad Nacional reports that after the corresponding medical evaluations, player Sebastián Córdova has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee."
The next step has already been mapped out. "Given this diagnosis, the player will undergo surgery in the coming days, and the recovery timeline will be determined based on his progress," the club added. In other words: surgery is on the horizon, and this is an absence measured in months, not weeks.
The injury occurred after Córdova had entered as a substitute in the second half against Cincinnati in the Leagues Cup. A bad landing, with no contact involved, was enough to send him to the ground and immediately bring the medical staff onto the field.
Pumas closed out their run in the tournament this Tuesday with a 1-1 draw against Columbus Crew, a result that was ultimately decided by penalty kicks in favor of the American club. But beyond the result, what lingered in the postgame press conference was Córdova's injury.
Solari sends a direct message to his player
Argentine coach Esteban Solari did not dodge the subject and was clear about what comes next for the club: reinforcing that position. "As a club we will meet in Mexico. It's a position we'd like to replace, because we don't have a deep squad and it's a position of great quality. We trust we can find a replacement," he explained.
Córdova was no ordinary player within Solari's setup. He had arrived to take on a significant role in midfield and had earned the coach's trust in a short amount of time. That is why the coach's words sounded more like a personal message than a medical update.
We're hurting, Sebas is a key player we needed, someone who was replacing a player who left. His injury hurts us. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery, he's a great player and a great human being. I hope the surgery goes well and he's back as soon as possible.Esteban Solari
Now the Pumas front office has a task ahead: heading into the market to find a replacement for a loss that stings both on the field and off it. Meanwhile, for Córdova, a process begins that many soccer players know all too well: surgery, rehabilitation and, with patience, a return to the field.
