Sebastián Viera's coaching debut: 3-3 draw and three injuries at Junior

Starting your coaching career with a 3-3 draw and three players hobbled by injury isn't exactly any manager's dream scenario. But that's how the night went for Sebastián Viera in his debut in charge of Junior, a match that had a bit of everything except calm.

The Barranquilla side hosted Jaguares at Estadio Romelio Martínez for matchday 9 of Liga BetPlay and ended up level at 3-3, in a game that got away from them more than expected. The point arrived almost at the final whistle, after Junior spent much of the match fighting an uphill battle.

The red and white bench had changed hands just days earlier. Alfredo Arias, a two-time champion with the club, departed due to poor results, and in his place came a familiar face for the fans: Viera, the Uruguayan goalkeeper with plenty of history at the institution, who now took on the challenge from a different spot, far from the three posts.

His first test came right at home, and the result left a bittersweet taste. There was a key moment in the match: Luis Muriel had the chance to put his team ahead from the penalty spot, but missed, and that miss weighed on the final scoreline. By the end, with the draw salvaged, the feeling was more one of relief than frustration.

Three injuries that set off alarm bells

Of the five substitutions Viera made in his debut, three were forced by physical issues, unusual for a single night. In the 24th minute, Pérez gave way to Castrillón. Already in the second half, Muriel was pulled and Teófilo Gutiérrez, another name with history at the club, came on. Near the end, Socarras also couldn't finish the match and was replaced by Herrera.

After the match, Junior issued an official medical report to clarify each player's condition. Pérez suffered a strain in his left hamstring. Muriel's issue, fortunately, was nothing more than a contracture in his right quadriceps. And Socarras presented another contracture, this time in his left hamstring.

In the press area afterward, Viera broke down his first night as a coach without hiding how unusual the situation was.

With this draw behind them, Junior is already looking ahead to its next match. On Saturday, September 12, at 8:20 p.m. (Colombia time), the team will visit Alianza, where Viera will look for his first win as a coach and, hopefully, a much lighter medical report.
