Sergio Vásquez joins Los Angeles FC on four-year deal

Another Ecuadorian name is heading to Major League Soccer. Sergio Vásquez, a midfielder who came through Orense's youth ranks, was unveiled as the newest addition to Los Angeles FC, the club with which he signed a contract running through the next four seasons.

The 22-year-old midfielder closes out a chapter that saw him grow from the academy into a regular fixture for Orense's first team. His move to the United States is no fluke or stroke of luck: his numbers over the past few years had already marked him as a player to watch in Ecuadorian soccer.

A years-long process

Vásquez made his professional debut in 2023 and has kept piling up minutes ever since. In total, he made 91 appearances for Orense, scoring 5 goals and adding 7 assists. In the season that just wrapped up alone, his output took another step forward: 4 goals and 3 assists in 21 matches, a progression that was enough to convince LAFC to invest in him for the medium term.

That kind of steady growth, rather than a one-off spike, is exactly what MLS scouts tend to look for when they turn their attention to South America: a young player with real minutes in a top division and room still to improve. Vásquez fits that profile, and now he has to prove it in a different league, with a different pace and different physical demands.

The challenge of earning a spot

The move to Los Angeles also marks his first experience outside Ecuador, no small thing for a midfielder who, until now, had only known the local competition. That's where the real challenge begins: fighting for a role on a roster that's in good form.

LAFC currently sit in third place in the Western Conference with 35 points, right in the thick of the race for a spot in the MLS playoffs. The fact that the club is willing to invest in a 22-year-old in the middle of that push says a lot about the upside they see in him down the road, though it also means he'll need to adapt quickly if he wants to see minutes this season.

For Orense, Vásquez's departure confirms that its development work is starting to bear fruit that crosses borders. For the player himself, the hardest part starts now: turning a strong résumé in Ecuador into real playing time in one of the fastest-growing leagues on the continent.
