Simeone carries extra weight into the derby: Atletico haven't won at the Bernabeu since 2016
The Cholo has faced Real Madrid 50 times since 2011, but his side hasn't won away from home in this fixture for nearly a decade.
Some games are decided in the head, others carry years of history on their back. The Madrid derby in matchday five of LaLiga 2026/27 falls squarely into the second category, because every time Atletico Madrid hosts or visits Real Madrid, another chapter gets written in the personal saga between Diego Simeone and the club that has crossed his path more than any other.
The baseline number alone is striking: since the Cholo took charge of the Colchoneros in December 2011, the two clubs have met 50 times. Simeone's record reads 13 wins, 17 draws and 20 losses. Read cold, those numbers seem to tilt the scale toward the Merengues, but they don't tell the whole story.
From 14 years without a win to eternal idol
To understand what this fixture means, you have to go back to the exact moment the Argentine arrived on the Rojiblanco bench. Atletico were dragging around a brutal drought at the time: 22 games without a win against Real Madrid, a stretch of 14 years without knowing what victory in the derby felt like. That ghost seemed like it was there to stay.
It took Simeone just three more games to snap the streak, but when he did, he did it in style: it came in the 2012/13 Copa del Rey final, the match that brought Atletico back to beating their neighbors after 25 meetings without doing so. Not an easy one to forget.
From that point on, the relationship changed tone. The Cholo, already a beloved figure as a Rojiblanco player, became the coach who put the club back among Europe's elite, and the derby stopped being a fixture played from memory and became one played on equal footing.
The Champions League wounds are still open
Not everything was joy, of course. The losses that sting the most came in the UEFA Champions League, with two lost finals against Real Madrid and eliminations in the quarterfinals, semifinals and round of 16, the latter in the 2024/25 edition. Those are the kinds of games that stay with you for years, weighing more than any league statistic.
And there's one detail worth keeping in mind ahead of this new chapter: Atletico haven't won as the visitor at the Bernabeu, or wherever the Merengues happen to be playing host, since February 27, 2016, when they won 1-0 on a goal from Antoine Griezmann in LaLiga. Nearly a decade later, that wait remains unbroken.
That's the backdrop for this new derby. Simeone has already shown he can snap streaks that run for ages. This time the question hanging over the match is whether he can do it on the road too, something that has eluded him for so long.
