Simeone praises Romero after his arrival at Atletico Madrid from Tottenham

The Argentine coach made no attempt to hide his enthusiasm over the signing of the World Cup winning center back, though he won't use him against Malaga due to lack of training time.

There's a new name on Atletico Madrid's list of signings, and Diego Simeone didn't hide his excitement. The Argentine coach spoke Tuesday at a press conference about the arrival of his countryman Cristian "Cuti" Romero, and he didn't hold back on the praise.

The defender, who arrived from Tottenham, completed his transfer last Saturday and joined the rojiblancos' preseason training that same day. He won't make his debut this Wednesday against Malaga at the Metropolitano: he still needs more training time before he can be included in the squad, as Simeone himself explained.

But that didn't stop "Cholo" from previewing what he expects from the center back. He spoke of "leadership, strength, quality, standing, commitment and belonging," strong words for a player who's just getting to know the locker room.

I see a player with all the footballing and personal values that identify with Atletico Madrid. And I hope he can show all of this that I'm describing, because he's clearly here to help us.Diego Simeone

This is no ordinary reinforcement. Romero arrives with the pedigree of having been a World Cup winner in 2022 with the Argentine national team and having played in the final of the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina finished as runners-up. That international experience, combined with the years he's racked up in the Premier League with Tottenham and before that at Atalanta, make him a center back with more than enough experience to compete for titles.

A profile Simeone knows well

The rojiblanco coach is known for demanding a very specific mix from his center backs: aggressiveness, clean distribution out of the back, and the personality for one-on-one duels. Romero, given the way he plays, fits that mold pretty well. It's no surprise, then, that Simeone spoke almost in terms of identity, as if the player had already been at the club for a while.

That said, the coach himself was cautious about the timeline. Romero will need time to adapt to the system, his new teammates and the physical demands that preseason brings. The match against Malaga comes too soon for him, but everything suggests his debut at the Metropolitano won't be far off.

What is clear is that Atletico made a strong bet on a player with proven standing, and Simeone, right from the start, is placing a significant responsibility on his shoulders: to be a source of leadership within a locker room that needs to renew its ambition.
