Sporting CP overturns deficit with two Braga own goals to win 3-1 in Portugal
Braga controlled the first half and took the lead, but two own goals and a strike from Zalazar flipped the match in Sporting CP's favor in the Liga Portugal.

Sporting Braga had the lead, but it was an own goal that opened the door to the comeback. With a final score of 1-3 at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, Sporting CP took all three points in a Liga Portugal match that had looked like an uphill battle well into the second half.
The first half belonged entirely to the home side. Braga pushed forward with more purpose and better chances, with Ricardo Horta and Denis Huseinbasic both testing the keeper from outside the box, until the 40th minute brought the opener in the least desirable way for the home fans: a Huseinbasic shot cannoned off the post and, on the rebound, the ball ended up in Rui Silva's own net. 1-0 for Braga at halftime, a reward for a stronger first half that, as it turned out, didn't quite tell the whole story of what was coming.
Sporting CP's response
The script flipped entirely in the second half. Rui Borges shuffled his bench, bringing on Maxi Araujo, Rodrigo Zalazar and Luis Suarez, and that last substitution paid off almost immediately: in the 65th minute, Suarez rose at the center of the box to head home a cross from Nestory Irankunda and make it 1-1.
The equalizer didn't last long for Braga. Five minutes later, in the 70th minute, another own goal, this time from Bernardo Fontes, turned the match on its head and put Sporting CP ahead 1-2. The psychological blow proved decisive, as the home side never recovered the sharpness it had shown in the first half. The result was sealed in the 81st minute, when Rodrigo Zalazar finished with his right foot from the center of the box after a counterattack started by Geny Catamo, making it a final 1-3.
By the numbers
Braga finished with more total shots, but Sporting CP was sharper in the moments that mattered. Possession was split almost evenly.
| Stat | Sporting Braga | Sporting CP |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 48.7 | 51.3 |
| Shots | 15 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 3 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 5 | 2 |
| Passes | 438 | 461 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 10 |
The estimated xG, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, also gives a slight edge to the home side: 1.789 versus 1.142 for Sporting CP. That reading confirms Braga created enough danger to have taken more from the match, though the own goals ultimately outweighed any statistic measuring chance creation.
The preview had pointed to a fairly even matchup: our projection gave Braga a 34% chance of winning, 29% for a draw and 37% for Sporting CP, with expected goals of 1.29 for the home side and 1.36 for the visitors. The final result, with a three goal margin, strayed well beyond that tight script, though the away win was indeed the more likely outcome according to those numbers.
What it means in the standings
With this result, Sporting CP moves to 18 points from 8 matches played (5 wins and 3 draws, no losses), while Sporting Braga sits at 11 points after 7 matchdays (3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses). The gap between the two in the standings now stands at 7 points. For Braga, the match leaves the sense of a solid first half undone by its own mistakes; for Sporting CP, confirmation that even when things get uncomfortable, it keeps collecting three points in the Liga Portugal.
