Sporting Cristal must beat Chankas CYC to halt its Clausura slide

Ten points from ten matches. That's the current tally for Sporting Cristal in the Clausura, a number that's already weighing on Somos Cristal and forcing the team to respond before the crisis drags on any longer.

The Apertura was already a tournament to forget: the celestes closed it out in twelfth place, far from what's expected of a club used to fighting near the top. The plan, of course, was to use the Clausura to right the ship. But the present isn't cooperating: Roberto Mosquera's team sits tenth, six points behind leaders Deportivo Garcilaso and Universitario, and five off the Copa Sudamericana qualification zone.

How do you climb out of a slump like this? By winning, plain and simple. And that's where the first test comes in: Chankas CYC, a match where Cristal needs to start collecting three points again to stop slipping further from the positions that matter.

There's another debt the team has been carrying for months: winning on the road. The away record has been a serious problem for the Rimac side, and the next stop, against CD Moquegua, comes right before the break for the FIFA date. It's the perfect chance to snap that negative streak and head into the tournament's restart with a different mindset.

Picking up all six points from those two matches isn't a luxury, it's practically a requirement if Cristal wants to regain its footing and face what comes next with some peace of mind.

A schedule that could be a lifeline

What's interesting is that after this double test, the fixture list turns a bit friendlier for the celeste squad. Before facing direct rivals like Cusco FC, Alianza Lima and Cienciano, Cristal will take on Atletico Grau, UTC and Comerciantes Unidos, three matches where it should be picking up good results if it wants to arrive with some cushion for the bigger clashes ahead.

Of those three direct matchups, only the Cusco FC game will be on the road; Alianza Lima and Cienciano will both visit Cristal's home stadium, giving the team an extra edge in a stretch that could define much of its ambitions.

The road ahead is demanding, no doubt, but not impossible. Sporting Cristal has in its hands a schedule that, if handled well, would let it keep dreaming of fighting for the Clausura title or, at the very least, securing a spot in international competition. It all starts, though, with beating Chankas CYC and finally breaking that road losing streak against Moquegua.
