St. Louis City SC thrashes LA Galaxy 6-2 as Holse nets hat trick and Navarro bags brace

A blistering start with two Holse goals in the first six minutes set up a rout that widens the gap between second and ninth place in the Western Conference.

St. Louis City SC thrashes LA Galaxy 6-2 as Holse nets hat trick and Navarro bags brace

The clock had barely started at Energizer Park and St. Louis City SC was already ahead. Carlo Holse finished with his left foot in the 1st minute off an assist from Rafael Navarro, and before LA Galaxy could even settle in, Holse struck again in the 6th minute, another left-footed finish, again set up by Navarro. The match ended 6-2, and what looked on paper like a tight contest turned into a blowout that left the Galaxy effectively out of the game before the half-hour mark.

Holse's third goal came in the 20th minute, also with his left foot and again off a pass from Durkin this time, completing a hat trick that made it 3-0. The Galaxy pulled one back through Robert Taylor, who curled a right-footed strike from outside the box into the top corner in the 30th minute, but the home side answered before halftime: Pablo Ruiz fouled Alexandru Matan inside the area, and Navarro made no mistake from the penalty spot in the 44th minute to make it 4-1. The first half ended with a fifth goal right at the buzzer: Lukas MacNaughton headed home into the top corner in the 51st minute (already into first-half stoppage time, with the score still reflecting the first half) off a cross from Matan following a free kick.

The second half seals the rout

Just a minute after MacNaughton's header, Navarro scored his second goal of the match, this time with his right foot from inside the box, to make it 6-1 in the 52nd minute. The Galaxy still had flashes of a response, with Justin Haak crashing a shot off the crossbar and João Klauss heading just wide from close range, until Klauss himself connected in the 70th minute, heading home a Marco Reus assist to make it 6-2, the final score. There were no further goals despite late Galaxy pushes from Joseph Paintsil and Marco Reus.

The match stats reflect St. Louis City SC's dominance even though the Galaxy had more shots overall:

According to our xG estimate based on the match's shots, St. Louis City SC generated 2.42 expected goals to the Galaxy's 1.78, a gap that confirms the home side's superiority on the scoreboard, though it doesn't fully account for a four-goal margin built largely on the efficiency of Holse and Navarro in key moments.

Before kickoff, our model gave St. Louis City SC a 58% chance of winning, against 20% for the Galaxy and 22% for a draw, with a projected expected-goals line of 2.18 for the home side and 1.23 for the visitors. The result went in the same direction as that projection but blew past it: the home team didn't just win, it nearly tripled its projected goal output, while the Galaxy ended up conceding far more goals than expected.

What it means in the Western Conference standings

St. Louis City SC came into this match sitting second in the Western Conference, with 50 points from 28 games played (14 wins, 8 draws and 6 losses), just one point behind league-leading Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Galaxy, meanwhile, sat ninth with 36 points from 29 games (9 wins, 9 draws and 11 losses) and a goal difference of minus 11. The gap between the two sides in the standings stood at 14 points before this match, and Sunday's rout only deepens the contrast between a team fighting at the top and one that needs to turn things around in what remains of the season.

For St. Louis City SC, Holse's three goals and Navarro's two goals plus an assist sum up a perfect afternoon. For the Galaxy, there's the nagging feeling of having created chances (18 shots is no small number) but without the defensive solidity needed to hold up on a night when the home side was fired up from the very first minute.
