Stuttgart routs Cologne 4-1 with dominant second-half surge in the Bundesliga
Stuttgart put the game away with three goals in under half an hour after the break, building on El Khannouss's opener in the 38th minute.

VfB Stuttgart put the game to bed with three brilliant goals in under half an hour of the second half, ultimately routing 1. FC Köln 4-1 at MHPArena in the Bundesliga. The curious part is that Cologne held firm well into the first half, but a low finish from Bilal El Khannouss right before the break cracked the game open, and it never closed back up.
The first half had been fairly even in terms of chances, with Dzenan Pejcinovic ringing the crossbar in the 14th minute and Josha Vagnoman doing the same in the 8th, plus several dangerous forays down the flank from Cologne through Linton Maina and Gideon Mensah. But it was Stuttgart who broke through: in the 38th minute, El Khannouss finished with his right foot from the center of the box off an assist from Vagnoman himself, sending the home side into the break with the lead.
The rout takes shape after the break
The second half opened with Cologne pushing for an equalizer, as Mikey Moore tested the goal a couple of times from inside the box without finding the target. But Stuttgart struck first: in the 59th minute, Grischa Prömel finished through the middle of the goal off an assist from Maximilian Mittelstädt to make it 2-0. Fifteen minutes later, with Ermedin Demirovic now on the field, the recently subbed-in forward scored to make it 3-0 in the 74th minute with an angled finish from the right, set up by Finn Jeltsch.
Cologne pulled one back in the 80th minute, though in the worst possible way for their cause: a shot from Marius Bülter deflected off Ramon Hendriks and into his own net, making it 3-1. The goal seemed to give the visitors some life, but Stuttgart shut the door on any doubt in stoppage time: in the 89th minute, Josha Vagnoman, this time as the man on the scoresheet, unleashed a shot from outside the box that snuck in on the right side of the goal for the final 4-1.
What the numbers say
Stuttgart clearly dominated possession and created significantly more clear-cut chances than their opponents, something the stats fully back up:
| Stat | VfB Stuttgart | 1. FC Köln |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 58 | 42 |
| Shots | 22 | 18 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 5 |
| Big chances | 5 | 1 |
| Corners | 10 | 8 |
| Passes | 526 | 380 |
What stands out most is how tight the post-match xG estimate turned out to be: our calculation puts the xG generated in the match at 3.319 for Stuttgart and 3.265 for Cologne, a razor-thin gap that contrasts sharply with the three-goal margin on the final scoreboard. Cologne created real danger with their shots, 18 in total, five on target, but they lacked the finishing touch and ran into an opponent that converted nearly every clear chance it got.
Our preview published ahead of the match gave Stuttgart a 68% chance of winning, with 19% for a draw and 13% for a Cologne win, projecting expected goals of 2.49 for the home side and 1.06 for the visitors, a combined total of 3.56. The final result, with five goals scored overall and a clear home rout, ended up lining up quite well with our projections: Stuttgart was the clear favorite, and that's exactly how it played out on the field.
What the standings show
In the table, both teams arrived with identical records before this match: one win and one loss in two outings, with Stuttgart sitting seventh and Cologne eighth, separated only by goal difference. With this win, Stuttgart builds a case to climb the table, while Cologne will need to regroup after a defeat that deepens their goal-scoring deficit in the competition.
What stands out most from this match is Stuttgart's efficiency at just the right moments: three shots, three goals, in barely 51 minutes between their first and last strikes. Cologne competed, created chances, and even had spells of control in the second half, but it wasn't enough to turn around a night that slipped away in the details.
