Suárez and Dávinson Sánchez Face Off in Champions League After Sharing a Locker Room with Colombia
The two Colombians who played together at the World Cup will line up as rivals in Sporting CP vs Galatasaray.
Some matchups read differently once you know the backstory. This Wednesday, at Estádio José Alvalade, two Colombians who were wearing the same jersey just a few months ago will look at each other as rivals. Sporting CP hosts Galatasaray on Matchday 1 of the Champions League league phase, and at the center of that story are Luis Javier Suárez and Dávinson Sánchez.
Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Colombia time, and the match will be available on Disney+ Premium, only for the South American feed. It might sound like a routine fixture on the calendar, but for any Colombian fan there's an extra layer to it: watching two national team teammates go head to head, each one defending his club's colors.
Suárez arrives in good form, one that hasn't gone unnoticed. In the Portuguese league he has four goals and an assist in five matches, once again standing out as Sporting's clearest attacking threat. That's no coincidence: last season he finished as the top scorer in the Portuguese league, and everything points to him wanting to repeat that feat. In the previous Champions League campaign, he also showed that the European stage doesn't faze him, scoring five goals against Club Brugge, Napoli (twice against PSG) and Bodø/Glimt.
On the other side is Dávinson, who arrives with a completely different but equally demanding role. In the Turkish league he has logged 341 minutes with Galatasaray, with one goal, one own goal and a yellow card to his name. His job isn't to create danger but to shut it down, and that's exactly where the matchup with Suárez becomes meaningful: one will look for space inside the box, the other will have to get there first, win the aerial duels and make sure he never gets comfortable.
What They Already Went Through Together
The curious part is that these two already share a recent chapter, though on the same side of the field. At the World Cup with Colombia, under Néstor Lorenzo, both played all five of the national team's matches. Suárez logged 332 minutes and an assist, without finding the back of the net; Dávinson, meanwhile, played 480 minutes and was a key piece of a defense that conceded just one goal in the entire tournament. Colombia's run ended against Switzerland on penalties, after going unbeaten in regulation in every match of the tournament. It was Dávinson, in fact, who missed his spot kick in that shootout.
That memory is set aside tonight. Now Suárez is looking to keep his scoring streak alive on European soil, and Dávinson has to contain someone he knows inside and out, since he's usually standing next to him rather than across from him. It's the kind of duel worth following almost like a parallel storyline within the match: two Colombians, each trying to get the better of the other, in the opening chapter of the Champions League for both of them.
