Switzerland battles past early scare to beat Slovenia 2-1 and stay atop Nations League group
Despite Vipotnik's early strike, Switzerland flipped the score with a Janza own goal and a finish from Ndoye, staying unbeaten atop Group B1.

Barely a minute had gone by at the thermoplan arena when Zan Vipotnik already sent a warning to Switzerland's bench: a left-footed shot from the middle of the box, low and inside the post, made it 0-1 for Slovenia with the match barely underway. It was a cold blow for a team arriving at this Group B1 clash in the UEFA Nations League as the unbeaten leader. In the end, Switzerland recovered and closed out the match 2-1, but the script was far from as comfortable as the final score suggested.
The equalizer came quickly, though not in the most spectacular fashion: in the 9th minute, an own goal by Erik Janza restored parity. Before that play, Switzerland had already given notice with a header from Johan Manzambi that went just wide, along with attempts from Michel Aebischer and Manuel Akanji off a series of corner kicks, so the equalizer arrived almost as a natural result of the home side's persistence. The rest of the first half was end to end, with yellow cards handed out (Vipotnik, David Zec, Vanja Drkusic) and chances for both sides, until, in the 37th minute, Dan Ndoye found the net with a left-footed finish from the middle of the box, right down the center of the goal, making it 2-1 at halftime.
There were no more goals in the second half, but there was no shortage of chances. Johan Manzambi tested the goalkeeper twice in the span of a minute (59' and 60'), Zeki Amdouni and Manuel Akanji also had the Slovenian keeper working, and on the other end Zan Celar, in the closing minutes, fired a shot that the Swiss defense managed to block. Slovenia turned to its bench in search of a response (David Brekalo, Adam Gnezda Cerin, Tjas Begic, Zan Celar, Tomi Horvat), while Switzerland managed the game with its own substitutions (Sascha Britschgi, Djibril Sow, Winsley Boteli, Adrian Bajrami, Fabian Rieder), but the scoreboard didn't move again.
What the numbers say
Switzerland's control of the ball was overwhelming: the hosts finished with 66.5% possession to Slovenia's 33.5%, which translated into nearly double the completed passes. Still, the pace of scoring chances was more even than the possession numbers suggest.
| Stat | Switzerland | Slovenia |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 66.5 | 33.5 |
| Shots | 13 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 3 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 583 | 289 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 15 |
According to our expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shot data, Switzerland generated 1.48 xG compared to Slovenia's 0.51 xG, a gap that backs up the control the home side exerted for much of the 90 minutes, though the final score (2-1) makes clear that Slovenia needed only a handful of chances to do damage.
What was expected versus what happened
Heading into the match, our projection gave Switzerland a 70% chance of winning, with 21% for a draw and just 9% for a visiting win, and it projected an expected scoreline of 2.08 goals for the hosts against 0.65 for the visitors. The final result, 2-1, ended up being tighter than projected: Slovenia did find the net, and did so first, something the forecast hadn't clearly anticipated.
What it means going forward
With this result, Switzerland remains atop the group with 9 points from 3 matches played, unbeaten, and a goal difference of +7. Slovenia has 4 points, also from 3 matches, with one win, one draw and one loss, sitting 5 points behind Switzerland in the Group B1 standings. The trio of key moments (Vipotnik's early strike, Janza's own goal, and Ndoye's finish) sums up a match that Switzerland ultimately controlled, but one that was never as settled as the final score made it look before kickoff.
