Superclásico No. 200 Between Universidad de Chile and Colo Colo to Be Played Without Colo Colo Fans at Estadio Nacional

Two hundred editions is a lot to look back on. Enough for unforgettable goals, refereeing controversies, unforgettable nights, and also for chapters nobody wants to remember. But this time, before the ball even starts rolling, the main character once again turned out to be an official statement.

The Presidential Delegation of the Metropolitan Region confirmed this afternoon that Superclásico No. 200 between Universidad de Chile and Colo Colo, set for this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Estadio Nacional, will be played without Colo Colo fans in attendance. A round number on paper, but an incomplete one symbolically: Chilean soccer's biggest rivalry, marking its own bicentennial of sorts, once again without one of the two fan bases in the stands.

The announcement came signed by the head of the agency, Germán Codina, who explained that the decision was made "taking into account the technical reports issued by the relevant institutions." According to officials, the call is not a matter of whim or politics, but something much simpler: the safety of those attending the stadium and of those living around it.

A Precedent That Looms Large

What's curious, or rather striking, is that back in May, Codina himself had all but assured the return of visiting fans to these clásicos. That hope didn't last long: it fell through that time too, and now the story repeats itself with the most anticipated match of the season.

Officials from the Delegation insisted that efforts to reverse this situation remain ongoing. "Over these past months we have worked intensively to move toward the return of both fan bases to Chilean soccer's clásicos," the statement read, leaving the door open for the format to change in future editions.

There's also a factor that emerged in recent weeks and wasn't part of the original plans: the weather front that has battered much of the country. Authorities cited it as an additional element in reaching their decision.
