Tahiel Jiménez's Brace Sinks Atlético San Luis as Santos Laguna Pulls Off the Upset

Despite controlling possession and dictating the run of play, Atlético San Luis fell 1-2 to a sharper Santos Laguna side, led by Tahiel Jiménez's two goals.

Tahiel Jiménez's Brace Sinks Atlético San Luis as Santos Laguna Pulls Off the Upset

Atlético San Luis went ahead in the 18th minute, had the game in its grasp at times, and still ended up handing it over thanks to the persistence of one man. Tahiel Jiménez scored twice for Santos Laguna and delivered all three points at Estadio Libertad Financiera, where the home side fell 1-2 despite dominating much of the possession.

The script opened with a well-executed set piece: a corner kick from Sebastien Salles-Lamonge and a header from Oscar Macias into the top corner made it 1-0 in the 18th minute. San Luis controlled the ball, created chances out wide, and looked to be setting the tempo. But Santos Laguna answered quickly: in the 33rd minute, another cross, this time from Ezequiel Bullaude, once again found Tahiel Jimenez, who this time headed it low into the net to level the score before halftime. The teams went into the locker room tied at 1-1 after a first half that offered chances for both sides, including a shot from Rafa Llorente that rattled the post early in the second half.

The second half kept things even until the 63rd minute, when Jimenez struck again. After a shot from Mauricio Cuevas was saved, the Santos Laguna forward pounced on the rebound from close range to make it a final 1-2. From there, Atletico San Luis tried to respond with substitutions (Sebastian Perez Bouquet, Lucas Esteves, Luis Najera, Roberto Meraz, and Leonardo Flores all entered) and had several headers that missed the target, but the equalizer never came.

What the Numbers Show

Possession belonged to the home side, which also had more corners, but Santos Laguna was sharper where it mattered most: shots on target.

That gap in finishing shows up too in the expected goals figures calculated after the fact based on shot location: 1.258 for Atletico San Luis compared with 2.082 for Santos Laguna, a number that backs up the idea that the visitors created the clearer danger despite seeing less of the ball.

The result ran counter to our pre-match projections. The preview gave Atletico San Luis a 53% chance of winning, with just 23% for Santos Laguna and a draw estimated at 24%. We also projected expected goals of 1.96 for the home side against 1.25 for the visitors. On the field, the opposite happened: the team with the worse odds on paper won, and did so with more precision than chances created.

Where It Leaves the Standings

Santos Laguna came into this match in 14th place with 13 points from 11 games played (four wins, one draw, and six losses), while Atletico San Luis sat one spot lower, in 15th, with 12 points from 11 matches (three wins, three draws, and five losses). The gap between the two sides before this meeting was just a single point, and Sunday's win lets Santos Laguna pull away from its direct rival near the bottom of Liga MX, while Atletico San Luis comes up short once again after having the match in hand following the opening goal.
