Tigres grinds out 1-1 draw at Guadalajara despite playing more than a half with ten men

Brunetta put Tigres ahead before being sent off, but his team held on for a 1-1 draw despite total Guadalajara dominance, which produced 2.47 xG to the visitors' 0.61.

Tigres grinds out 1-1 draw at Guadalajara despite playing more than a half with ten men

Playing the entire second half with ten men, Tigres left Estadio Akron with a point that, given how things played out, felt like a triumph. Guadalajara dominated from start to finish but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against a rival that played more than 45 minutes with a man down and still held on until the final whistle.

The match started with Guadalajara taking the initiative, as the possession numbers would later confirm, but it was Tigres who struck first. In the 35th minute, a well-executed counterattack ended at the feet of Juan Brunetta, who finished with his left foot from inside the box after a pass from Diego Lainez, making it 0-1. It was the only stretch in which Tigres looked like a complete team.

Because just as the second half got underway, that same Brunetta, the goal scorer, was shown a red card in the 46th minute, leaving his team with ten men for the rest of the match. From there, the game flipped completely: Guadalajara poured forward on Nahuel Guzman's goal, who had already bailed out his side more than once in the first half, and Tigres dropped back to defend however it could.

The equalizer took time to arrive, but it did. In the 76th minute, Jordan Carrillo, who had come on from the bench a few minutes earlier, struck a low right-footed shot from the center of the box, just inside the left post, off an assist from Bryan Gonzalez, to make it 1-1, the final score. Guadalajara kept pushing for a second goal until the end (Carrillo had a header that grazed the crossbar in the 82nd minute, along with several more chances in stoppage time), but the scoreboard didn't budge again.

Dominance that wasn't enough

The numbers make clear just how much control Guadalajara had, a gap made even wider by Brunetta's red card:

Thirty shots to seven, with possession hovering near 69 percent, paint the picture of a Guadalajara side that had the ball and kept trying again and again, but never found the finishing touch needed to take all three points. According to our own expected-goals estimate based on the match's shots, Guadalajara generated 2.47 xG to Tigres's mere 0.61 xG, a gap that confirms the imbalance in chances even though the scoreline ended up level.

That contrast also strays quite a bit from our pre-match projection: our model gave Guadalajara a 41 percent chance of winning, a 31 percent chance of a draw and 28 percent to Tigres, with combined expected goals of 2.36 (1.30 for the home side and 1.05 for the visitors). The draw did end up being the result, but not because of an even match: it was Brunetta's early red card that completely tilted the balance of play without that translating into the goal Guadalajara needed.

What it means in the standings

In the Liga MX table, Guadalajara stays in fourth place with 20 points from 12 matches played (5 wins, 5 draws and 2 losses), while Tigres sits 13th with 14 points from the same number of matches (3 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses). The gap between the two in the standings is 6 points, a distance that Saturday's draw didn't change by much: Guadalajara added to its total, but not what the run of play seemed to promise.

For Tigres, the point tastes like pure resilience: playing more than 45 minutes a man down on the road and walking away with a draw is no small feat. For Guadalajara, meanwhile, there's a lingering sense of a missed opportunity against a shorthanded opponent, with the xG numbers serving as proof that the chances were there, just not the finishing.
