Tigres hosts league leader Toluca looking to snap home winless streak

Ten points separate the two sides in the standings as the Felines look to put an end to their run of draws against a Toluca side that arrives as league leader and slight favorite according to the numbers.

Tigres hosts league leader Toluca looking to snap home winless streak

Ten points separate Tigres and Toluca in the Liga MX standings, and that number alone explains the contrast arriving at Estadio Universitario. Toluca sits atop the table, while Tigres is down in 15th place. On paper it looks like a mismatch, but the recent form of both clubs adds a bit of uncertainty to that read.

The Felines arrive on a streak of draws: three straight stalemates before a loss and a win in their last five matches, with just one victory in that stretch. So far this tournament they have posted 2 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses in 10 games, with 10 goals scored and 13 allowed, a negative differential that says plenty about their struggles. At home this same Liga MX season, though, Victor Manuel Vucetich's side has averaged 1.5 goals scored and 0.75 allowed per game across a sample of 4 matches, with a 50 percent clean sheet rate, and tends to find its best scoring window between the 46th and 60th minutes. Juan Brunetta (4 goals) and Rodrigo Aguirre (3) have been their top attacking threats in that sample.

Toluca, meanwhile, arrives as league leader with 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in 10 matches, 23 goals scored and 12 allowed, the best record in the league alongside America's. Over their last five games they have three wins, one loss and one draw. On the road this season, across a sample of 5 matches, they average 1.6 goals scored and 0.8 allowed, with a 60 percent clean sheet rate and their most productive stretch coming between the 61st and 75th minutes. Alexis Vega and Federico Vinas, each with 4 goals in that sample, lead the scoring, with Helinho adding 3.

What the head to head says

The two sides have met 8 times, with the edge going to Toluca: 3 wins to Tigres' 2, along with 3 draws, and a clear goal difference in favor of the Red Devils (11 to 8). It is not a history that particularly favors the Monterrey side at home.

Probable lineups

For Tigres, the projected starting eleven (medium confidence based on recent matches) would have Nahuel Guzman in goal; Alan Franco, Joaquim, Jesus Garza and Mauro Lainez across the back line; Juan Brunetta, Fernando Gorriaran, Diego Sanchez, Diego Lainez and Romulo in midfield; and Rodrigo Aguirre leading the attack.

Toluca, also with a medium confidence projected lineup, is expected to field Luis Garcia between the posts; Bruno Mendez, Jesus Gallardo, Diego Barbosa and Everardo Lopez in defense; Federico Pereira, Nicolas Castro, Alexis Vega, Helinho and Franco Romero in midfield; and Federico Vinas as the lone striker.

What the numbers say before kickoff

Our model does not see an overwhelming favorite, though it does give a slight edge to the visitors:

ProbabilityPercentage
Tigres win31%
Draw30%
Toluca win39%

All three outcomes are fairly even, with the away win just slightly ahead of both the draw and the home win. Expected goals (our own estimate, not an official figure) are also close: 1.18 for Tigres and 1.35 for Toluca, for a combined total of 2.53. The trends back up the idea of an open game: an 80 percent chance that both teams score and just 33 percent that the match goes over 2.5 goals. It is worth noting that all of this is our own projection, not a betting line.

With Tigres needing to end its home skid to pull away from the bottom of the table and Toluca looking to hold onto first place, the match at Estadio Universitario promises to carry a bit more uncertainty than the gap in the standings suggests.
