Tim Ream retires from the US national team after 16 years and 86 caps

The Charlotte FC defender closed out his time with the national team in a friendly held as a tribute in his hometown of St. Louis, and he will keep playing in MLS.

Tim Ream retires from the US national team after 16 years and 86 caps

A tribute, a lopsided scoreline and the close of a 16-year career. That's how Tim Ream said goodbye to the US national team: the Charlotte FC defender officially announced his retirement from the national team on Tuesday, just before the friendly against Chile that ended 4-2 in favor of the home side at Energizer Stadium, in his hometown of St. Louis.

It wasn't just any match. The game was organized as a tribute to his run with the national team, and Ream leaves with numbers that speak for themselves: 86 international caps, of which he was captain in 33, across a career that began 16 years ago.

At 38, the defender had no doubts when it came to making the call. He explained it himself in the TNT broadcast:

It wasn't a difficult decision. You get to a home World Cup, you get to be captain of the team. What else is there at almost 39? For me it was an easy decision, and age was the biggest factor.Tim Ream

From St. Louis to the Premier League

Ream is pure product of the St. Louis soccer pipeline. He came up through the St. Louis Scott Gallagher youth club and played college soccer at St. Louis University before being picked in the second round (18th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls. He started right away and took home the MLS Rookie of the Year award in 2010.

In 2012 he made the jump to England with Bolton Wanderers, where he made 125 appearances. But the club that defined the bulk of his career was Fulham, where he passed the 300-appearance mark across all competitions and helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League on three separate occasions. He was also named Fulham's player of the year for the 2017-18 season.

An international career in two acts

What's notable about his time with the national team is that it split into two clearly defined stretches. He made his debut on November 17, 2010, against South Africa, and by 2018 his run with the national team seemed to be over. Yet he came back to pull on the jersey again and added 60 more caps from that point on. He arrived as a late addition to the roster for the 2022 World Cup, but his strong form with Fulham earned him a starting spot under Gregg Berhalter, a role he held until the round-of-16 exit against the Netherlands.

With Mauricio Pochettino taking over as head coach in September 2024, Ream remained part of the coach's plans and was named captain right before the 2026 World Cup cycle got underway. He was also part of both US squads that won the Concacaf Nations League, in the 2019-20 and 2023-24 editions, and his only goal for the national team came against Puerto Rico in a 2016 friendly.

Looking back on the biggest moments of his career, Ream was clear about what he values most:

Honestly, I think what I'm most proud of is being named captain. If you look at the trophies, the Nations League wins were a lot of fun. Being part of the team that won the first one, the inaugural one, nobody can take that away from you. Those are a couple of moments for me.Tim Ream

Ream also had words about the future of the team, with young players like Cavan Sullivan, 17, emerging on the radar. He said they remind him of when the current core group of Giovanni Reyna, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie first came up.

What strikes me most about them is the same thing I noticed when the Westons, the Tylers, the Gios made the jump to the national team. They have tremendous confidence, and that's refreshing. It's right on the edge of arrogance, but I think you need that bit of swagger. You have to believe in yourself. They're still learning.Tim Ream

The retirement is only at the national team level. Ream will keep playing for Charlotte FC, the club he joined in August 2024, and for now he hasn't made any decision about his MLS future beyond this season.
