Tolima hosts Independiente del Valle in Copa Libertadores 2026 round of 16

The earthquake on August 10 forced a change to the schedule, but it didn't change what's at stake: Tolima is handling the most important series of its season. This Tuesday, August 18, Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro in Ibague hosts Independiente del Valle for the first leg of the round of 16 of the 2026 Copa Libertadores, a matchup originally set to be played a week earlier that CONMEBOL rescheduled after the earthquake that shook Colombia. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. (Colombia, Ecuador and Peru time), and the match will be broadcast on ESPN and Disney+ Premium. The return leg already has a confirmed date: Tuesday, August 25, in Ecuador.

For the 'Pijao,' this matchup is anything but ordinary. It's only the second time in the club's history that it has reached the round of 16 of the tournament, having done so previously in 2022. There's another detail that adds extra weight to the tie: at this stage, Tolima is the only Colombian club still alive in the Libertadores, after every other Colombian team was eliminated along the way.

Sebastian Oliveros' side knows home-field advantage could prove decisive. Building a lead in Ibague, even a slim one, would completely change how the team approaches the return leg in Ecuador. And the current form helps: Tolima sits third in the Liga BetPlay II-2026, with nine points, after beating Internacional de Bogota 2-1 in its last domestic match, a win that restored confidence right before this international test.

An opponent riding a hot streak with unfinished business

On the other side stands Independiente del Valle, which arrives as the LigaPro leader and in excellent form, having just beaten Delfin 3-2 in its last outing. For the 'Matagigantes,' a draw or even a win in Ibague would leave the club in a comfortable spot to settle the series at home.

There's something bigger than a round-of-16 tie riding on this match: the Libertadores remains unfinished business for the Ecuadorian club.
