Toluca beats Querétaro at the Corregidora with Viñas strike in stoppage time

The Diablos Rojos won 1-2 on the road despite playing a man down from the 30th minute, with a brace of penalty kicks deciding the match in the final gasps.

Toluca beats Querétaro at the Corregidora with Viñas strike in stoppage time

Toluca pulled off a hard-earned win at Estadio Corregidora, beating Querétaro 1-2 in a Liga MX clash that had it all: a red card overturned by VAR, a missed penalty and decisive goals right up to the final whistle. Federico Viñas converted the winner from the penalty spot with just a minute left, after Querétaro had leveled the match with a header from Santiago Homenchenko.

A first half full of controversy

The match caught fire in the 29th minute when referee Yonatan Peinado showed a red card to Diego Barbosa, a call that was reviewed by VAR and ultimately overturned. Just a minute later, though, in the 30th minute, Barbosa was sent off anyway, leaving Toluca down to ten men before the first half was even over.

In first-half stoppage time, the referee pointed to the spot for Querétaro after a foul by Fernando Arce inside the box, a call confirmed by VAR review at the start of the second half. But Alí Ávila fired his shot just wide of the right post in the 50th minute, squandering the chance to put the home side ahead despite their numerical advantage.

Helinho breaks the deadlock, Homenchenko levels it

With the score still level at 0-0, the moments that would decide the match finally arrived. In the 64th minute, Helinho curled a left-footed free kick into the top corner to make it 1-0 for Toluca, a stunning goal that appeared to be putting the visitors on track for the win despite playing a man short. Querétaro refused to give up and found the equalizer in the 78th minute, when Santiago Homenchenko headed home a cross from Daniel Parra to make it 1-1 and reignite hope among the home fans.

The decisive moments came late. In the 86th minute, Lucas Abascia fouled Federico Viñas inside the box for a penalty, and the Uruguayan forward made no mistake from the spot in the 89th minute to seal the final 1-2, a crushing blow for a Querétaro side that had clawed its way back against ten men.

Stats from an even contest

The numbers reflect just how competitive the match was, despite Toluca playing with a man down for more than an hour.

Our own post-match expected goals estimate, calculated based on shot locations, produced 2.436 for Querétaro and 2.079 for Toluca, figures that confirm both sides created enough danger to have deserved more goals than they ultimately scored.

The preview didn't quite get it right

Ahead of the match, we had projected a 28% chance of a Querétaro win, a 32% chance of a draw and a 40% chance of a Toluca victory, with expected goals of 1 for the home side and 1.25 for the visitors. The final result ended up matching the favoritism given to the "Diablos Rojos," though the path there was far bumpier than expected, featuring a red card, two penalties and an emotional back-and-forth that no projection could have foreseen.

What the result means in the standings

With this win, Toluca moved to 10 points on the tournament table, built on three wins, one draw and one loss, and now sits just 3 points behind leaders Club América. Querétaro, meanwhile, remained at 7 points, with a record of two wins, one draw and two losses, and still needs results to help climb the overall standings.

The match made clear that Toluca can grind out uncomfortable results even while playing a man down for more than sixty minutes, while Querétaro will rue the missed penalty and lack of composure in the decisive moments that ultimately cost them all three points in front of their own fans at Estadio Corregidora.
