Toluca rout Atlas 5-2 in Liga MX, stay atop the standings

In just 28 minutes, Toluca had already put the game away. A penalty converted by Alexis Vega, a finish from Jesus Angulo and a strike from outside the box by Federico Vinas made it 3-0 before the half-hour mark at Estadio Nemesio Diez. By the end, Toluca had cruised to a 5-2 win over Atlas in a Liga MX match that started as a blowout and finished with a bit more drama than the final score suggests.

The first goal came after a VAR review: in the 16th minute, a penalty was awarded to Toluca for a handball by Florian Monzon inside the area, and two minutes later Alexis Vega converted from the spot. Less than three minutes passed before Jesus Angulo, assisted by Nicolas Castro, made it 2-0. And before the 30th minute, Federico Vinas extended the lead with a shot from outside the box that flew straight into the top corner, off an assist from Bruno Mendez. The first half ended 3-0, with Atlas' only real threat coming from a shot off the post by Victor Rios in the opening minutes.

Atlas fights back, but it's not enough

The second half began with substitutions on both sides and Atlas showing a bit more life. In the 50th minute, Florian Monzon, the same player who had given away the penalty, headed home a cross from Luis Esteves to make it 3-1. Toluca's response was immediate: just two minutes later, Paulinho, who had come on at halftime, finished from the center of the box to make it 4-1, assisted by Angulo.

The match appeared to be settled for good in the 59th minute, when Jorge Rodriguez turned the ball into his own net off a corner kick, making it 5-1. Atlas still had time to put a better face on the scoreline with a goal from Duk in the 78th minute, finished point-blank from inside the area, but there were no further scares before the final whistle.
