Toluca routs Monterrey 4-0 as Salcedo sees red
A Paulinho brace and goals from Castro and Gallardo powered Toluca to a wire-to-wire win over a Monterrey side that finished with ten men after Salcedo's red card.

Nicolas Castro needed just seven minutes to get the Nemesio Díez on its feet, and that opening blow turned out to be a preview of what was coming: Toluca thrashed Monterrey 4-0 in a match that got away from the visitors long before the final whistle. Paulinho scored twice, Jesus Gallardo added the finishing touch, and to make matters worse for Monterrey, Carlos Salcedo was sent off late in the game.
The script was clear from the opening whistle. Castro finished with his right foot from the center of the box, curling it into the top corner after an assist from Brian Garcia, and Toluca never let go of control of the match. Fifteen minutes later, Paulinho doubled the lead with a close-range left-footed strike, again set up by Castro on a play that started with a through ball. At 2-0 heading into halftime, Monterrey was already struggling to keep pace.
The second half picked up right where the first left off. In the 50th minute, Paulinho struck again, finishing with his right foot from a tight angle after a pass from Helinho to make it 3-0. Ten minutes later, things got even worse for Monterrey: Carlos Salcedo was shown a red card for fighting in the 60th minute, forcing the visitors to play the rest of the match with ten men. The finishing blow came in stoppage time, in the 89th minute, when Jesus Gallardo slotted the ball low and inside the post, assisted by Federico Viñas, to make it a final 4-0.
A dominant performance reflected in the numbers
The stats confirm what was evident on the field: Toluca controlled possession and created more clear-cut chances over the full 90 minutes.
| Stat | Toluca | Monterrey |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 61.9 | 38.1 |
| Shots | 10 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 2 |
| Corners | 6 | 6 |
| Passes | 496 | 299 |
| Fouls committed | 9 | 12 |
According to our estimate based on the match's shot data, Toluca generated 1.33 expected goals compared to Monterrey's 0.37, a gap that confirms the 4-0 scoreline wasn't inflated by the red card but rather a true reflection of a match dominated from start to finish.
The contrast with our pre-match projection is also worth noting. Before kickoff, we gave Toluca a 56% chance of winning, with a draw at 23% and an away win at 21%, and we projected a scoreline close to 2.07 goals for the home side and 1.22 for the visitors. The final result exceeded that outlook: Toluca didn't just win, it won with more authority than projected, while Monterrey fell well short of its expected goal tally.
What it means for the standings
In the Liga MX table, Toluca holds onto fourth place with 27 points from 16 matches played (seven wins, six draws and three losses), while Monterrey sits tenth with 21 points from 15 matches (six wins, three draws and six losses). The gap between the two clubs stands at 6 points, a margin this rout only underlines.
For Monterrey, managed by Matias Almeyda, the night at the Nemesio Díez leaves plenty to fix: Salcedo's red card and just two shots on target over the full match speak to a visiting side that never found a way to slow Toluca down or create real danger going forward.
