Tottenham struggle more than expected but stun Coventry in stoppage time to win 3-1

James Maddison needed just thirteen minutes to break the game open with a strike from outside the box that curled into the top corner, and Tottenham Hotspur went on to claim a 3-1 win over Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But it was far from straightforward: Coventry equalized right at the start of the second half and forced the hosts to dig in again until, deep into stoppage time, Ben Davies settled the matter.

The first half belonged entirely to Tottenham. Maddison finished with his right foot after an assist from Mohammed Kudus to make it 1-0 in the 13th minute, in a half where the hosts piled up chances (Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke) without adding to the scoreline. That was the score at the break.

Coventry strikes back, Tottenham answers

The second half opened with a gut punch for Roberto De Zerbi's side: barely a minute into the restart, in the 48th minute, Jack Rudoni pounced on a counterattack to finish from point blank range, assisted by Brandon Thomas-Asante, making it 1-1. Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, had finally found reward for their persistence.

Tottenham's response came quickly. In the 57th minute, Omar Marmoush received the ball from Andy Robertson and finished with his right foot from outside the area to restore the hosts' lead: 2-1. From there the game opened up, with changes on both benches (Ben Davies, Conor Gallagher and Mateus Fernandes came on for Tottenham; Taiwo Awoniyi, Frank Onyeka and Ephron Mason-Clark for Coventry) and chances at both ends, including several headers from Taiwo Awoniyi and Bobby Thomas that failed to find the net.

The game was decided in stoppage time, which the fourth official extended to eight minutes. In the 95th minute, Ben Davies, who had come on after an injury to Robertson, finished with his left foot following a pass from Dominic Solanke to make it a final 3-1.

What the numbers say

Tottenham dominated possession and overall play, but the scoreline reflected a far tighter contest than those figures suggest.

Notably, according to our estimate based on the match's shots, xG actually favored Coventry (1.303 to Tottenham's 0.903), despite having registered just one shot on target. That's a sign the visitors created danger with few attempts, while Tottenham needed volume to turn their dominance into goals.

The result also ran somewhat against our pre-match projections: our model gave Tottenham a 54% chance of winning, 25% for a draw and 21% for an away win, with expected goals of 1.87 for the hosts and 1.11 for Coventry, a combined total of 2.99. The final score ended up with four goals total, and Coventry, despite playing away and generating very little in attack, managed to level the game in the second half before falling.

What it means in the standings

Coming into this match, Tottenham Hotspur sat on 6 points from 7 games (1 win, 3 draws and 3 losses), while Coventry City also had 6 points but from 2 wins, 0 draws and 5 losses. The two sides were separated by just 0 points before this meeting, both near the bottom of a table led by Manchester City with 21 points. The win gives Tottenham something to build on as they look to climb the table, while Coventry again come away empty handed despite having rattled their hosts with that temporary equalizer.
