Toulouse Erases 2-0 Deficit to Snatch a Point at Lorient
The visitors came alive after halftime to seal a 2-2 draw that feels almost like a win in France's Ligue 1.
Lorient found themselves two goals up inside just eight minutes and still walked away with nothing: Toulouse leveled it 2-2 at the Stade du Moustoir to grab a point that, at this stage of Ligue 1, feels almost like a win.
The match looked to be going the home side's way. Ibrahima Baldé opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a strike into the top corner after a through ball from Panos Katseris on the counterattack, and two minutes later, in the 38th, Noah Mbamba doubled the lead with a left-footed effort from the center of the box, again assisted by Katseris after a quick breakaway. At 2-0 with halftime approaching, Lorient looked to be in full control of a match in which, up to that point, they had been more clinical than dominant.
But Toulouse responded immediately. Just as the second half began, in the 47th minute, Casper Tengstedt, who had come on at the break, headed home a corner delivered by Cristian Cásseres, pulling one back before Lorient had time to reset. The goal shifted the momentum toward the visitors, who kept gaining ground as the minutes passed until, in the 67th minute, Thomas Jørgensen made it 2-2 with a shot from the center of the box, once again set up by Cásseres, who provided both of Toulouse's assists in the second half.
Lorient had their chances to reclaim the lead: Jean-Victor Makengo hit the left post in the 63rd minute, after Ilyas Azizi had done the same for Toulouse in the first half, but neither side found the net again down the stretch.
Dominance that didn't translate into more goals
The match numbers reflect well the turnaround that took place after the break. Toulouse controlled possession more, generated more shots, and ended up, according to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, as the team that created the most danger: 1.234 xG compared to Lorient's 0.636.
| Stat | Lorient | Toulouse |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 41 | 59 |
| Shots | 10 | 13 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 4 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 445 | 654 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 18 |
In our preview, we projected a tight match, giving Lorient a 46% chance of winning, Toulouse 25%, and a draw 29%, with expected goals of 1.48 for the home side and 1.03 for the visitors. The final result, a draw with four goals split between the two sides, ended up matching the possibility of a shared points that we also had on the board, though the script, a two-goal lead partially clawed back, played out more dramatically than any number could have suggested.
What the point leaves behind
With this draw, Lorient sits on 5 points in Ligue 1, the product of one win, two draws and one loss in four matches played. Toulouse, for their part, have 2 points after two draws and two losses in their four outings, a gap of 3 points between the two sides in the standings. Neither team could fully capitalize on a match that had a bit of everything: lethal counterattacks, a header off a corner, and a draw that, based on how the second half unfolded, was anything but easy for Lorient to swallow.
