Toulouse wakes up after halftime, routs Le Mans 0-3
Russell-Rowe, Dønnum and Tengstedt sealed it in the second half of a match that Le Mans had matched for the first 45 minutes.

The scoreboard showed a lopsided 0-3 in favor of Toulouse at the Stade Marie-Marvingt, but the story had more nuance than the final margin suggests. Le Mans held its own for the first 45 minutes, even enjoying more possession, and it wasn't until the start of the second half that the match began to slip away from them.
In fact, the first half ended scoreless at 0-0. There were chances on both ends: Casper Tengstedt tested the keeper early, and Louis Mafouta had a header that just missed for Le Mans. But everything changed the moment the second half kicked off: almost as soon as play resumed, Jacen Russell-Rowe finished with his left foot from inside the box, curling it into the top corner, assisted by Aron Dønnum, for an immediate 1-0. The psychological blow proved decisive, because Le Mans never managed to find its footing again.
Toulouse doubled the lead just thirteen minutes later: in the 58th minute, Dønnum himself struck with his left foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0. With that second goal coming so early in the second half, the visitors were able to control the pace of the match without any serious scares.
Le Mans tried to respond with substitutions, making three changes at once in the 60th minute to freshen up the attack, and did create some chances through Lucas Calodat and Billal Brahimi, but couldn't find the goal that would have brought them back into the game. In the 74th minute, VAR disallowed a goal from Tengstedt, and three minutes later another review confirmed that it hadn't been a goal either, two episodes that kept the score at 0-2 for a stretch longer than the run of play suggested. Finally, Toulouse completed the rout in the 86th minute: Tengstedt finished from close range with his right foot after an assist from Cristian Cásseres, making it a final 0-3.
What the numbers say
Le Mans had more possession and more passes, but that statistic ended up hollow: they managed just one shot on target the entire match, compared to five for Toulouse. The visitors' efficiency explains much of the result.
| Stat | Le Mans | Toulouse |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52.8 | 47.2 |
| Shots | 11 | 13 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 5 |
| Corners | 2 | 2 |
| Passes | 566 | 529 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 9 |
Our estimate of expected goals generated during the match backs up that reading: Toulouse racked up 1.72 compared to 0.818 for Le Mans, a gap that reflects the true nature of the contest better than the three goal final margin.
Our preview had tabbed Toulouse as the favorite, giving them a 41% chance to win compared to 30% for Le Mans and 29% for a draw, with an expected goals projection of 1.21 for the home side and 1.46 for the visitors, for a total of 2.68. The result ended up being more lopsided than that projection anticipated, though the direction of the outcome, a road win, matched what the model had flagged as most likely.
What it means in the standings
With this result, Toulouse moved to 9 points through 7 matches played (2 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses) and sits in seventh place in Ligue 1. Le Mans, meanwhile, remains on 6 points through 7 matches (1 win, 3 draws, 3 losses) and sits in 15th place, with a goal difference of minus 5 that this loss only made worse. The two sides are separated by 3 points in the table. For Le Mans, who matched Toulouse for 45 minutes, the match leaves the sense that the game was decided by details in the second half rather than by control of play.
