Troy Parrott sinks Real Madrid as Betis edges out 1-0 at La Cartuja despite Whites' dominance

Parrott's 80th minute goal was enough for Betis to pull off the upset in Seville, despite Madrid's control of the match.

Troy Parrott sinks Real Madrid as Betis edges out 1-0 at La Cartuja despite Whites' dominance

Troy Parrott showed up in the six-yard box in the 80th minute to poke home a loose ball off a corner kick, and that point-blank finish was all Real Betis needed to knock off Real Madrid 1-0 at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville, in LaLiga play. The scoreline held up even though the closing stretch saw almost everything imaginable: a goal wiped out by VAR, a penalty awarded to the Whites and that same penalty missed.

The match told a story that didn't match the final score. Real Madrid controlled possession (58.5% to Betis' 41.5%) and created far more chances, but ran into the woodwork and Alvaro Valles' hands time and again. As early as the 14th minute, Vinicius Junior blasted a close range shot off the left post. Before halftime, Dean Huijsen tried his luck with a header that clanged off the crossbar. In the second half, Mbappe also hit the frame of the goal with a shot from the right side of the box. Betis, meanwhile, held firm with composure, defended in an organized way and waited for its chance.

That chance came off a set piece: a corner kick, a header from Nelson Deossa that Alvaro Valles... sorry, that Betis itself turned into a goal a split second later, when Parrott, lurking at the back post, jabbed the rebound into the net. 1-0, and the Seville crowd erupted.

A nerve-wracking finish

Real Madrid pushed back hard. In the 84th minute, Mbappe struck the crossbar again, this time set up by Bernardo Silva off another corner. Two minutes later came the moment of highest tension: Carlos Espi, who had just come on, put the ball in the net, but VAR chalked off the goal for offside, and the call was confirmed in the 88th minute. Betis remained ahead on the scoreboard.

The drama wasn't over yet. In stoppage time, in the 92nd minute, Natan brought down Vinicius Junior inside the box for a penalty and picked up a yellow card. Mbappe stepped up to take it from the spot, but his shot was saved. Betis held on to the result through the six minutes of added time.

The numbers back up what happened on the field: Real Madrid doubled up Betis in shots and comfortably outpaced them in possession and passing. Our own xG estimate, calculated from the match's shots, tells the same story: 3.72 for Real Madrid against just 0.95 for Betis. That's a massive gap for a final score that ended up favoring the team that created less.

Our preview gave 50% odds for an away win, 25% for a draw and another 25% for a home win, with expected goals of 1.94 for Real Madrid and 1.33 for Betis. The final result contradicted that projection from start to finish: the team with the lower odds on paper won, and it did so without needing to score more than once, while the favorite came away empty handed despite camping near the opposing goal for all 90 minutes.

What it means in the standings

With this result, both teams sit at 9 points in the LaLiga table after 4 matches played, each with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. Real Madrid holds second place and Real Betis third, separated only by goal difference: +7 for the Madrid side compared to 0 for the Seville club. For Betis, the win confirms it can go toe to toe with the big clubs even with less of the ball; for Real Madrid, what remains is the feeling of a dominated match that slipped away on details that can't fully be controlled: a post, a crossbar, a missed penalty and a goal disallowed at just the right moment.
