The news came Monday from Nyon, Switzerland, home of the European governing body. According to the official statement, "a moment of silence will be observed and a banner displayed as a sign of solidarity and support before all UEFA Champions League matches." The banner will carry a direct, unadorned message: "You are not alone Nepal."

This is not the first time European soccer has paused for a catastrophe outside the continent.
