Leandro Umpiérrez Nets First Career Brace as Peñarol Routs Danubio 4-0

Header, goal. Rebound, goal. That's how simple the afternoon was for Leandro Umpiérrez, who this Saturday scored his first career brace as a professional in Peñarol's 4-0 rout of Danubio, played at the Jardines del Hipódromo stadium in matchday five of the Torneo Clausura.

The midfielder from San José, nicknamed "maragato" for his hometown, opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a header that left Danubio's goalkeeper with no chance. Peñarol never let go of control of the match, and just as the result seemed settled, Umpiérrez struck again: in the 60th minute he pounced on a rebound off the opposing goalkeeper and made no mistake, sealing the final 4-0. Two blows from a player who, until that day, had never scored twice in the same game.

The stat carries extra weight when you look at his recent history. Before this match, Umpiérrez had scored seven goals wearing the black and yellow shirt in the Primera División. With the brace against Danubio, he reached nine goals in total, all built match by match since his official debut with the Carbonero.

The road to the brace

His debut as a starter was far from a dream. Umpiérrez made his debut on March 30, 2025, in a 2-0 loss to Cerro Largo, played at the Campeón del Siglo in matchday nine of that year's Torneo Apertura. Nothing at the time suggested he would go on to become a regular contributor to Peñarol's scoring.

Two weeks later came his personal redemption: on April 12, 2025, he scored his first official goal in a 4-2 win over Miramar Misiones. From there, goal after goal, he added eight more, establishing himself as a key option in the team's attacking midfield.

With this rout, Peñarol reaffirms its steady march through the Clausura, and Umpiérrez adds another chapter to a season that already has him among the club's key scoring names.
