Universidad de Chile falls 2-1 in Concepcion, loses sole hold on second place

It took just one minute for Universidad de Chile to find itself up against the ropes in Concepcion. Bianneider Tamayo brought down Jeison Fuentealba inside the box, referee Diego Flores pointed straight to the spot without hesitation, and a match that had barely begun was already an uphill battle for the Blues.

The final score was 2-1 in favor of Universidad de Concepcion at Estadio Ester Roa Rebolledo, in matchday 21 of the 2026 Liga de Primera. The fallout for La U goes well beyond the three lost points: this marks two straight losses, the previous one coming in the superclasico against Colo-Colo, and the sole grip on second place that the club had worked so hard to build is now shaking.

Fuentealba himself stepped up to take the penalty and converted in the 3rd minute. The psychological blow was so severe that the second goal arrived just thirteen minutes later: Rogelio Funes Mori, the Campanil's marquee signing, threaded a pass through for Cecilio Waterman, who slipped away from Tamayo, left goalkeeper Gabriel Castellon for dead, and finished in the 16th minute to make it 2-0. In fifteen minutes, La U had essentially lost the match.

Gago's complaint

Fernando Gago did not look for excuses on the field, though he did acknowledge that the state of the pitch had complicated things for his side just as much as for the home team. "We knew the field was like that, that this was the situation, and we tried to play through it anyway," the Argentine coach explained after the match.

What did sting him was the early blow. The coach admitted that the early penalty had shaped everything that followed:

He went further when discussing Matias Zaldivia's late consolation goal, which did not arrive until the 89th minute, following a shot from Ignacio Vasquez that struck the post and fell right to the defender:

There was time for almost everything in the closing stretch. Eduardo Vargas had given a warning with a header in the 23rd minute that goalkeeper Jorge Broun saved, the same keeper who would end up sent off in the 93rd minute after protesting to the referee, forcing Waterman to take over between the posts for the final minutes. La U, with no substitutions left to make, could not take advantage of the extra man, and Yerco Oyanedel even had a chance to seal the match for the home side in stoppage time.

The win pulls Universidad de Concepcion out of the relegation zone, a major relief after Cobresal beat Palestino on Friday and dropped them to the bottom of the table. For La U, on the other hand, the picture grows more complicated: Universidad Catolica hosts O'Higgins this Monday at Claro Arena, and a win would pull them level with La U in second place, right in the thick of the fight for the direct spot in the Copa Libertadores group stage.
