Universidad de Chile and Colo-Colo Meet for the 200th Time in the Campeonato Nacional

Two hundred chapters of the same story, and it still has plenty left to tell. This Sunday, starting at 3:00 p.m., Estadio Nacional will host something that goes well beyond the standings: Universidad de Chile and Colo-Colo face off for the 200th time in the Campeonato Nacional, a milestone few rivalries in Chilean soccer can claim.

And this is no ordinary meeting. Beyond the historical weight behind it, this Superclasico brings together the two teams sitting atop the domestic table, so there's more than pride on the line. But before looking ahead to the standings, it's worth looking back, because the history between these two clubs is loaded with numbers that still turn heads.

A Record-Setting First Chapter

It all began officially on August 7, 1938, at the Campos de Sport de Ñuñoa. That day, Colo-Colo won 6-0, with three goals from Segundo Flores, two from Manuel Aravena and one from Carlos Arancibia. Eighty-seven years later, that result remains the biggest rout either side has ever posted in the history of the competition.

On the other side, Universidad de Chile owns its own mark: a 5-0 win at Estadio Nacional on April 29, 2012, during the Apertura tournament. Matias Rodriguez scored twice that day, and Marcelo Diaz, Igor Lichnovsky and Angelo Henriquez rounded out the scoring.

There was also a title decided between them. That came in 1940, when Colo-Colo won 3-2 in the Apertura final, with two goals from Alfonso Dominguez and one from Juan Vergara, while Eduardo Holzapfel scored twice for the blues. The rematch, however, came later that same year: the U claimed its first star.

The Names That Made History

When it comes to clasico scorers, there's a tie at the top: Carlos Campos for the U and Esteban Paredes for Colo-Colo share the lead with 16 goals apiece. As for appearances, nobody has topped Misael Escuti, the Colo-Colo goalkeeper who played in 39 matches. Right behind him is Leonel Sanchez, with 33 appearances, though three of those came while wearing the Colo-Colo jersey before he became a U idol.

The best-attended match of them all was played in 1989, during the second round of that tournament, drawing 77,584 paying fans to the stands. It ended 1-1, with goals from Fernando Astengo for Colo-Colo and Patricio Reyes for the U.

In the overall tally of the 199 matches played so far in the Campeonato Nacional, Colo-Colo holds the edge with 90 wins, there have been 58 draws, and Universidad de Chile has 51 victories. That's the backdrop both teams will carry onto the field this Sunday, knowing that a win doesn't just add points to the table, it also carries weight in a rivalry that has been writing its story match by match for nearly nine decades.
