Universitario looks to shore up its defensive cracks ahead of Alianza Lima clash at Matute
After the draw with Comerciantes Unidos, Cuper weighs changes in midfield and defense for the derby.
A 2-2 draw with Comerciantes Unidos at the Monumental left more questions than answers. And right now, with the derby against Alianza Lima at Matute just around the corner, Universitario can't afford to keep giving away first halves. Hector Cuper's side had won three straight, but that stumble showed once again that the kind of performance needed to fight for the Clausura 2026 title still hasn't shown up.
One thing is working: the scoring. Universitario is one of the most prolific teams in the tournament, with 17 goals, and much of the credit goes to Gianluca Lapadula (six) and Alex Valera (five), the club's top scorers. The problem is on the other end of the field. The 'U' has plenty of firepower up front but lacks solidity in the back: it has conceded 11 goals in the Clausura, a high number for a team hoping to stay in title contention until the end.
Against Comerciantes Unidos, Juan Manuel Requena and Adrian Quiroz once again turned in a shaky performance in midfield, which opens the door for both Jorge Murrugarra and Piero Quispe to start at Matute. In defense, it's the same story: Williams Riveros still hasn't fully convinced, and there's growing talk of the need for Anderson Santamaria to step into the heart of the back line. That move would also free up Murrugarra from defensive duties so he can focus on running the game.
Cuper faces a decision to shake things up
The Argentine coach himself acknowledged the possibility that Murrugarra and Quispe could start the derby, a decision that could give the team a boost right when it needs one most. Cuper has shown a certain stubbornness during his time at the 'U', but he's also proven he knows how to adjust when the team needs it. And this looks like one of those moments.
It could be that both of them playHector Cuper
The brief remark sums up the moment well: there's no firm certainty, but there is a clear sense of what needs fixing. Will those changes be enough to stop an Alianza Lima side playing at home? The field will decide that. What is clear is that Universitario can no longer afford another late rethink like the one against Comerciantes Unidos, since that halftime fix wasn't enough to secure the win.
With the scoring sorted out and defense still a work in progress, the derby at Matute shapes up as a demanding test of whether Universitario is truly in shape to keep fighting for the title and keep dreaming of a fourth straight championship.
