Bentancur, Ugarte, Araujo and Álvaro Rodríguez Give Uruguay a Bigger Premier League Presence
Bentancur at Tottenham, Ugarte at Manchester United (injured), Araujo on loan from Barcelona to Liverpool and Álvaro Rodríguez at Bournemouth make up Uruguay's largest contingent in English soccer in years.

Four different sky blue jerseys, four different English stadiums and one single weekend to see it all: the Premier League returns this Friday, and Uruguay will have its largest presence in the league in years. Rodrigo Bentancur, Manuel Ugarte, Ronald Araujo and Álvaro Rodríguez will represent Uruguay in the English top flight in the 2026/2027 season, one more than last season.
Two of those names are already familiar to the league. Bentancur remains at Tottenham Hotspur, though this time holding onto his spot won't be so simple: the club spent big to bring in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, two additions who will compete with him for minutes in midfield. Ugarte, meanwhile, stays at Manchester United, but in an uncertain role. The former Fenix midfielder suffered a torn ACL in his knee during the 2026 World Cup with the Uruguayan national team and will miss a large chunk of the season. Before the injury, talk of a possible exit from the club had been building; now it remains to be seen what role Michael Carrick has in mind for him once he's back.
The big story is Ronald Araujo, who arrives in the Premier League on loan from Barcelona to Liverpool. After a difficult stretch in Catalonia, the defender now has the chance to rediscover his best form in a league that demands physicality and toughness, exactly his strengths. Could this be the year Araujo shows again why he's considered one of the best center backs in the world? The setting, at least, looks promising.
The fourth Uruguayan is Álvaro Rodríguez, who at 22 signed with Bournemouth after a strong season at Elche. The English club has a reputation for developing players who arrive without much fanfare and later selling them on to Europe's top teams, so the challenge for the forward is clear: make the most of the spotlight.
Left out of the mix is Santiago Bueno, whose Wolverhampton side was relegated to England's second division. His name remains on the radar of major clubs across the continent, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him move on before the transfer window closes.
Debut dates
The action kicks off on Saturday, August 22, with Hull City hosting Ugarte's Manchester United (8:30 a.m.), followed by Brentford against Bentancur's Tottenham (1:30 p.m.). Sunday, August 23 brings Álvaro Rodríguez's debut, with Manchester City hosting Bournemouth (10:00 a.m.), and Araujo's, in Newcastle against Liverpool (12:30 p.m.).
Meanwhile, that same Saturday, August 22, also marks the start of Italy's Serie A, which will feature five Uruguayans: Mathías Olivera at Napoli, the two-time defending champions looking to reclaim the title after finishing second behind Inter; Juan Rodríguez and Agustín Albarracín at Cagliari; Alan Matturro at Genoa, still awaiting clarity on his future; and Franco Israel, Torino's goalkeeper, who won't be back on the field until 2027 following shoulder surgery.
