Valentín Barco makes full Chelsea debut and earns the applause in win over Luton Town
The Boca fullback controlled the match with 118 touches and won over Xabi Alonso on his first night wearing the blue shirt.
Whistles at the start, applause at the end. That's how Chelsea fans are summing up the night of Valentín Barco, who made his full debut and played all 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Luton Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup, played Thursday night. It's no small thing to start out under the crowd's suspicion and end up as the standout name of the match.
The fullback who came through Boca Juniors arrived at Stamford Bridge amid a whirlwind transfer window for Chelsea, who in those same hours completed the signing of Dibu Martínez and are awaiting news on a possible departure for Enzo Fernández. But while all that gets sorted out, Barco went out on the field and answered in the only way he knows how: with the ball glued to his foot.
The debut numbers leave no doubt about his influence on Xabi Alonso's side. He was the player with the most touches on the ball (118), the most accurate passes (99), and the most effective involvement in the opponent's half (67 actions). Not bad for a kid who just a few months ago was playing at the Bombonera.
And that's despite the fact that talk before the signing centered mostly on his offensive side. Because he also shone defensively: seven recoveries, four duels won and two successful tackles round out the picture of a player who held nothing back in his first outing in the blue shirt.
Xabi Alonso, delighted with "Colo" Barco
After the match, the Spanish coach had nothing but praise for the Argentine:
Valentín had a very impressive performance, very dynamic. Good with the ball, very alert to what was happening in midfield.Xabi Alonso
The coach's words confirmed what was seen on the field: a player at ease, confident enough to call for the ball and take risks with direct passes to the forwards, no easy feat for someone who was just getting to know his teammates.
Enzo Fernández left out as his future gets sorted
The other side of the coin on Chelsea's night was Enzo Fernández, left out even of the substitutes list despite no reported injury issues. His name remains linked to Manchester City, a club he has reportedly already given the green light to in order to move the negotiation forward. Everything points to the transfer being finalized in the coming hours, in a window where Chelsea appear determined to move key pieces of their squad without losing sight of the generational changeover represented by players like Barco.
