Valverde injures himself on a stunning tackle, forced off before the end of Clasico

Some tackles get celebrated like goals, only to end up hurting a lot more than they seemed to at first. That is exactly what happened to Federico Valverde in the middle of Clasico, at Spotify Camp Nou, during matchday ten of LaLiga 2026/2027.

The Uruguayan had started in a position that is unusual for him: right back, wearing Real Madrid's captain's armband. Jose Mourinho stationed him there to shut down the lane for two dangerous players, Anthony Gordon and Raphinha, and for a good stretch of the match the "Hawk" handled that job more than well, staying locked into his zone and tracking every run up that flank.

The trouble started in the 23rd minute. Valverde slid in at midfield to strip the ball from Joao Cancelo, and he did it in almost impossible fashion: with a backheel tackle, the spectacular kind that gets the bench on its feet. The move came off perfectly, but something gave in the back of his right leg as he executed it.

From that point on, the Uruguayan began showing clear signs of discomfort. He did not go down or ask to be substituted right away: he gritted his teeth and kept running, covering his zone as best he could, though his expression had changed. He pushed through like that for almost forty more minutes, until his body finally said enough.

His final exit came at a particularly awkward moment for Real Madrid: right as Barcelona found the equalizer. With the score level and Valverde clearly hurting, Mourinho wasted no time turning to the bench, bringing on Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries in place of the captain in the 61st minute.

The forced substitution cut short what had, up to the injury, been one of the most solid performances on the Real Madrid side in this Clasico. Valverde had become a key piece in Mourinho's setup, marshaling that right flank with the added responsibility of the captain's armband, and just as the match turned uphill for his team he had to watch the rest of it from the sideline.

It remains to be seen how serious the issue with his right hamstring actually is, but the image of the Uruguayan asking to come off after such a spectacular play against Cancelo leaves a bittersweet feeling: the quality of the tackle set against the physical cost it ended up carrying for the player, and for Real Madrid, in the middle of Clasico.
