Van Bronckhorst returns to Camp Nou as Feyenoord coach, 19 years after his last night as a European champion

Some reunions are gifts the calendar hands out by accident, and this is one of them. On September 9, when the 2026/27 Champions League league phase kicks off, Barcelona will host a Feyenoord side at the Spotify Camp Nou led by a man who knows every corner of that stadium: Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The 51 year old Dutchman is no ordinary visitor. He wore the Barcelona shirt for four seasons, from 2003 to 2007, after arriving from Arsenal, and he started in one of the nights every Barcelona fan knows by heart: the final on May 17, 2006, at the Stade de France, when Barcelona came from behind to beat Arsenal itself 2-1 and lift its second Champions League title. Van Bronckhorst played all 90 minutes in that back line alongside Carles Puyol and Rafael Marquez, while up front Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta, Deco and Eto'o helped make that Frank Rijkaard side one of the most fondly remembered teams in the club's recent history.

Now he returns, but from the other side. This year he went back to Feyenoord, the club of his native Rotterdam, to begin his second spell as head coach after signing a two year contract with an option for a third. And his first major European test of this new stretch will be nothing less than a visit to the house where he was once idolized.

A bond that goes beyond Barcelona

Van Bronckhorst's history with Feyenoord runs just as deep. He came through the club's academy as a player, had two spells there as a footballer, and between 2015 and 2019 managed the first team, leaving a mark that is still remembered in Rotterdam. In 2017 he brought Feyenoord the Eredivisie title after an 18 year wait to win the Dutch league again, and added two Dutch Cups and two Super Cups on top of that. After stints at Rangers, Guangzhou City and other projects, he returned this year with the mission of putting the club back among Europe's top ranks.

Rarely does a draw produce such a perfectly round coincidence: the coach who dreamed of this club as a kid, and who became a European champion with it as a player, now returns to Camp Nou trying to hurt Barcelona with the team from his hometown.

A precedent dating back to the 1970s

The curious thing is that Barcelona and Feyenoord barely have any history against each other. Their only official meeting dates back to the 1974/75 European Cup: a 0-0 draw in Rotterdam and a 3-0 rout at Camp Nou featuring a hat trick from Carles Rexach. Five decades later, the context is completely different, but the stage is set to repeat itself on the very same pitch.

For Van Bronckhorst, this match closes a curious circle: from defending the left back spot in Barcelona's colors to trying to stop, from the visitors' bench, the very club that made him a European champion.
