Vancouver Whitecaps rally past Austin FC to tighten grip on West lead
After falling behind to a Uzuni goal, Vancouver flipped the scoreline in the second half with goals from Gauld and Diaby to win 2-1 in MLS.

Myrto Uzuni put Austin FC ahead right before halftime, but Q2 Stadium went quiet as soon as the second half kicked off: Vancouver Whitecaps FC turned the game around in half an hour and walked away with a 2-1 win in an MLS match.
The home side had earned its lead at the break. Uzuni, who had already given warning signs with a couple of earlier attempts, struck in the 39th minute with a left-footed shot from the middle of the box that found the dead center of the net. Austin FC went into the locker room up 1-0, feeling like it had controlled the most heated stretches of the first half.
What followed completely flipped the story. Barely into the second half, in the 46th minute, Ryan Gauld equalized with a low header near the left post off a cross from Emmanuel Sabbi. The goal came so fast that the crowd barely had time to settle back in after the break, and it breathed new life into a Vancouver side that had already been controlling much of the possession.
The decisive blow came in the 70th minute, courtesy of one of the substitutes. Yadaly Diaby, who had entered the match minutes earlier for Bruno Caicedo, received a pass from Tate Johnson and unleashed a right-footed strike from long range and a tight angle that found the far top corner. A stunning goal that made it 1-2, and one that Austin FC could not answer despite pushing until the final whistle: Brandon Vazquez tested the keeper with headers on more than one occasion, Jorge Alastuey and Ervin Torres also had their chances, but Vancouver's goal held firm, even through the five minutes of stoppage time played at the end.
What the numbers say
The final score ended up reflecting pretty accurately what played out on the field in the second half. Vancouver had more of the ball and created more clear-cut chances in the decisive stretch, though Austin FC was more clinical in front of goal across the match as a whole.
| Stat | Austin FC | Vancouver Whitecaps FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 46.1 | 53.9 |
| Shots | 9 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 3 |
| Corners | 4 | 6 |
| Passes | 450 | 526 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 11 |
In our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Vancouver generated 0.91 against Austin FC's 0.58, a gap that confirms that, despite the home side's lead at the break, it was the visiting team that ended up creating the sharper threat.
Our preview published ahead of the match gave Vancouver Whitecaps FC a 48% chance of winning, against 25% for Austin FC and 27% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.18 for the home side and 1.70 for the visitors. The final result ended up matching that forecast: the favorite won, though it had to come from behind rather than control the game from the start.
What it means in the standings
In the Western Conference, Vancouver Whitecaps FC moves to 55 points through 30 matches played (16 wins, 7 draws and 7 losses) and holds onto first place. Austin FC, meanwhile, sits on 31 points from the same number of matches (7 wins, 10 draws and 13 losses) and occupies 14th place, with a goal difference of -18 that is the second worst in the entire conference. The two sides are separated by 24 points, a fairly clear reflection of the opposite moments they are going through this season.
For Austin FC, the blow stings twice as much: after controlling the first half and taking the lead, the club watched the match slip away in just 24 minutes of the second half. For Vancouver, on the other hand, the comeback confirms the level that has it sitting atop the conference, built on Gauld's goal and the decisive impact of Diaby off the bench.
