Vancouver Whitecaps blow past Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field
Elloumi and Müller sealed the game in five minutes as the Whitecaps stayed atop the Western Conference.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC beat Seattle Sounders FC 2-0 at Lumen Field on Saturday in an MLS Western Conference matchup that ended up reflecting the visitors' control of the game. A scoreless, choppy first half gave way to a second period in which Vancouver stepped on the gas and put the game away with two goals in barely five minutes, from Rayan Elloumi and Thomas Müller.
Dominance that took time to show on the scoreboard
Over the first 45 minutes, the Whitecaps were clearly the better side but ran into sloppy finishing and a home defense that held on through cleared corners and off-target shots. Andrés Cubas, Ralph Priso and Oliver Larraz all had warning signs in that opening half, with Larraz clipping the crossbar right before the break, but the score stayed level at 0-0 at halftime.
Seattle Sounders, for their part, barely tested Yohei Takaoka. Their best chances, through Albert Rusnák and Snyder Brunell, drifted wide without forcing any real saves.
Five minutes that decided the match
The story changed in the closing stretch. In the 76th minute, Rayan Elloumi latched onto a through ball from Emmanuel Sabbi and curled a right-footed shot into the top corner for the 1-0. Barely five minutes later, in the 81st, Thomas Müller pounced on a ball from Oliver Larraz off a free kick, finishing with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0. Seattle tried to respond by bringing on Osaze De Rosario and Sebastian Gomez, but couldn't trouble the Canadian defense in the time that remained.
The numbers back up the visitors' edge
The match stats made clear the result was no fluke. Vancouver controlled possession, created far more chances and was far sharper in front of goal.
| Stat | Home | Away |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 43 | 57 |
| Shots | 5 | 19 |
| Corners | 1 | 8 |
| Passes | 412 | 539 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 11 |
The shot count (19 to 5) tells the story: Vancouver fired off nearly four times as many attempts as their rival. By an in-house estimate based on the shots taken, the Whitecaps generated 1.99 expected goals compared to just 0.57 for Seattle, a gap that confirms the dominance translated into real danger rather than empty possession.
A result that ran against the preview
The projection published before the match gave Vancouver a 42% chance of winning, compared with 34% for Seattle and 24% for a draw, with a fairly even expected-goals forecast (1.86 for the visitors against 1.68 for the home side). The final result went the way the favorites suggested, but the way Vancouver closed it out, with two goals in five minutes and total control of the shot count, exceeded what those numbers had anticipated.
What the result means
With the win, Vancouver Whitecaps FC remain atop the Western Conference with 37 points from 18 matches, built on 11 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses. Seattle Sounders FC, meanwhile, sit in 11th place with 24 points from 18 matches (7 wins, 3 draws and 8 losses), 13 points behind their opponent from Saturday night. The gap in the standings ended up matching what played out on the field: a Vancouver side superior in nearly every phase of play and a Seattle team that never found a way to shake off the visitors' pressure.
