Vancouver Whitecaps collapse at home as St. Louis City rally from 0-1 down to win 1-3

The celebration lasted barely 60 seconds for Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Emmanuel Sabbi made it 1-0 in the 1st minute with a curling shot from outside the box, and everything pointed to the Western Conference leader building on its home advantage. Instead, Vancouver ended up on the losing side of a rout: St. Louis City SC answered with three goals before the break to win the match 1-3.

Sabbi's goal was a jolt that St. Louis absorbed without much trouble. In the 22nd minute, Simon Becher leveled the score with a shot through the middle of the goal after a through ball from Alexandru Matan, and from there the visitors took control of the first half. In the 40th minute, Tomas Totland made it 1-2 with a low shot next to the left post, assisted by Daniel Edelman, and when the clock hit 44 minutes, Conrad Wallem, assisted by Totland himself, sealed it at 1-3 with a left-footed strike that slipped in on the right side of the net. Three goals in 22 minutes left Vancouver reeling before the halftime whistle.

In the second half, the home side tried to regroup. Ryan Gauld, Brian White and Oliver Larraz came off the bench to give the attack a different look, and there were shots that grazed the crossbar and clear chances that never found the target. In the 74th minute, VAR reviewed a possible penalty for Vancouver, and the call stood: no penalty. St. Louis, for its part, focused on managing the lead and looking for the counter with fresh legs like Rafael Navarro and Damion Downs, who both came on in the second half. The scoreboard did not move again, and the 1-3 scoreline held until the final whistle.

The stats confirm that St. Louis's first-half dominance was no fluke. The visitors created more real danger despite taking fewer total shots.

Vancouver fired off more shots, but with far less precision: only 3 of its 15 attempts were on target, compared to 6 of 11 for St. Louis. The result also runs completely counter to what was projected before kickoff. Our preview gave Vancouver a 57% chance of winning, just 19% to St. Louis and 24% to a draw, with expected goals of 2.01 for the home side against 1.11 for the visitors.
