Vasco da Gama dominates but can't break down stubborn Olimpia in frustrating scoreless draw
The Brazilian side racked up 2.49 expected goals but couldn't find the back of the net in the Copa Sudamericana.

Vasco da Gama and Olimpia played out a 0-0 draw at Estádio São Januário that left the Brazilian side with an overwhelming sense of a missed opportunity. In the Round of 16 clash in the Copa Sudamericana, the home side controlled the game from start to finish, but a lack of finishing touch and stout Paraguayan resistance kept that dominance off the scoreboard.
A siege that went unrewarded
From the opening whistle, Vasco da Gama camped out in Olimpia's half and began creating danger down the flanks. As early as the 14th minute, David tested the goalkeeper with a shot from the middle of the box that drifted just wide of the post, while Alan Saldivia had a go from outside the area on the same play. Jose Rodriguez was another persistent threat: in the 16th minute he headed over, and in the 46th, just after the restart, he forced a low save following a Johan Rojas assist.
The onslaught continued in the first half with Nuno Moreira's attempt in the 28th minute and near simultaneous shots from Cauan Barros and Cuiabano in the 29th, both off corner kicks that found no target. Right before the break, Johan Rojas tried again in the 45th minute, only for the visiting defense and goalkeeper to come up with another crucial stop.
The second half brought more of the same. Jose Rodriguez had as many as three clear chances between the 47th and 64th minutes, and substitutes Marino Hinestroza and Claudio Spinelli kept knocking without luck with shots in the 75th and 81st minutes. The clearest chance late on fell to Spinelli, who headed over the crossbar in the 90th minute after a cross from Lucas Piton. Olimpia, for its part, barely threatened: its best chance was a Romeo Benitez header in the 54th minute that went wide.
The numbers confirm the dominance
The stats back up what played out on the field: a Vasco da Gama side that was completely in control of possession and the attack, yet unable to turn that into goals.
| Stat | Vasco da Gama | Olimpia |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 74.5 | 25.5 |
| Shots | 21 | 2 |
| Shots on target | 7 | - |
| Big chances | 5 | - |
| Corners | 11 | - |
| Passes | 612 | 219 |
| Fouls committed | 4 | 8 |
The gap widens when looking at the post-match xG estimate: Vasco da Gama racked up 2.49 expected goals based on the quality and volume of its shots, compared to just 0.18 for Olimpia. That figure, calculated from shot location, confirms the home side deserved far more than it got, while the Paraguayans settled for absorbing pressure with only a handful of forward forays.
A preview that didn't quite play out
Ahead of the match, our projection gave Vasco da Gama a 43% chance of victory, a 26% chance of a draw and 31% for Olimpia, with a combined goal forecast of 3.23 between the two teams. The final result landed close to the draw scenario, though the way it unfolded, a massive gulf in play that never showed up on the scoreboard, ran counter to the expectation of a tighter game with more goals than what had been forecast.
What the draw leaves behind
Vasco da Gama is left with the frustration of failing to reward a dominant performance against an Olimpia side that sat back and held firm defensively. The Brazilian club's attacking substitutions, with Hinestroza, Spinelli, Piton and Zuccarello all coming on, weren't enough to break down the Paraguayan resistance. The 0-0 leaves this Round of 16 tie wide open, in a match where the stats and the xG told a very different story than the one the scoreboard showed.
