Vélez hosts Estudiantes looking to snap draw streak in Clausura matchday 8
El Fortín is coming off four straight draws and needs a home win to avoid falling behind in the playoff race.
Four draws in a row. That's the number chasing Vélez, and the one it wants to erase as soon as possible at the José Amalfitani. On Saturday, September 5, at 9:15 PM (Argentina and Uruguay time), the club hosts Estudiantes de La Plata for matchday 8 of the 2026 Clausura Tournament, broadcast live on ESPN Premium. For those following the league from other countries, kickoff is at 8:15 PM in Chile and 7:15 PM in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
El Fortín arrives bruised, not so much because of its league results but due to the recent elimination against Boca in the Copa Argentina. That defeat left a bitter taste that Guillermo Barros Schelotto wants to shake off quickly, and there's no better way to do it than at home. In the Clausura, Vélez has drawn 1-1 with Boca, 1-1 with Defensa y Justicia, 2-2 with River and 1-1 with Deportivo Riestra. Those are points on the board, sure, but they've also stalled any real push into the fight for Zone A and the Annual Table.
On the other side, Estudiantes arrives with a different need: picking up all three points to stay in the playoff hunt. El Pincha comes off a fairly uneventful 0-0 draw against Newell's, though the round before that it showed a much sharper side by routing Barracas Central 3-1. That inconsistency is exactly what Eduardo Domínguez is trying to fix: the team has what it takes to win, but it also has games where it simply goes flat.
The names that could make the difference
At Vélez, two players have kept the team afloat despite the run of draws: Manuel Lanzini, with his vision and his trademark pause in the final third, and Thiago Silvero, who has established himself as one of the squad's most dangerous attacking options. If El Fortín needs a moment of quality to unlock a stuck game, it will likely come from the feet of one of those two.
Estudiantes, meanwhile, continues to lean on Guido Carrillo, who remains the team's reference point up front and the player most often sought out when a goal is needed. His presence in the opposing box forces Vélez's defense to stay alert for all ninety minutes.
The recent head-to-head record favors the home side: Vélez won 1-0 in this year's meeting during the Apertura, and also took the win in the 2024 Supercopa Internacional, a convincing 2-0. Those results guarantee nothing, but they do give a bit more confidence to a Fortín squad that needs to start winning again to avoid falling further behind in the standings.
