Villarreal Crash Into Dituro as Elche Escape the Ceramica With a Scoreless Draw

With twenty shots and an xG of 2.267 to Elche's mere 0.267, Villarreal could not get past an inspired Dituro, and both sides split the points at the Ceramica.

Villarreal Crash Into Dituro as Elche Escape the Ceramica With a Scoreless Draw

Twenty shots, seven on target, an xG worthy of a blowout win... and nothing to show for it. Villarreal ran into Elche time and again at the Estadio de la Ceramica and the scoreboard read 0-0, a result that falls well short of what the yellow side produced across 90 minutes, plus an especially long stretch of stoppage time at the end.

The match, part of LaLiga, followed a clear script from the opening minute: Villarreal pushed forward relentlessly while Elche settled in to resist. Right from the start, Alberto Moleiro tested Matias Dituro with a shot the keeper saved at the near post, and just two minutes later Ilias Akhomach fired from outside the box, missing high. The first half turned into a parade of corners and home chances: Tani Oluwaseyi, Moleiro again, Ayoze Perez and Santi Comesana all had their shots, but Elche's goal stayed intact thanks to Dituro's saves and a bit of luck.

The second half brought more of the same, with new names taking center stage. Akhomach again forced a save out of Dituro with a low shot, Logan Costa headed over from a corner without finding the net, and even Thomas Lemar had a response for Elche, firing a shot the visiting keeper handled comfortably. The tensest moment came in the 62nd minute, when VAR reviewed a play inside the box and ruled there was no penalty for Elche, a decision that did nothing to change the flow of a match that remained firmly in Villarreal's control.

The substitutions did not change the storyline. With Georges Mikautadze, Pape Gueye, Gerard Moreno and Nizar all on the field, Villarreal kept pressing until the final whistle: Nathan Saliba tried from outside the area, Logan Costa headed at goal again, and Gerard Moreno himself had the last chance, also with a header, in the 95th minute, part of a seven-minute stoppage period that reflected just how congested the closing stages became. Elche, having brought on Tete Morente, Martim Neto, Fer Nino and Ruben Sanchez, defended for dear life and even managed to cause a flicker of concern with long-range efforts from Javier Morcillo and Fer Nino, though neither truly troubled Peter Gulacsi.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The gap in possession and chance creation showed up clearly in the final stats:

According to our post-match xG estimate based on shot location, Villarreal generated 2.267 expected goals against just 0.267 for Elche. That is a massive gap confirming the hosts deserved far more than they got, though, as with any estimate of this kind, it guarantees nothing about what actually ends up on the scoreboard.

Before kickoff, the projection we published in our preview gave Villarreal a 59% chance of winning, against a 23% chance of a draw and an 18% chance of an away win, with expected goals of 2.14 for the hosts and 1.13 for Elche. The draw ended up prevailing despite being the least likely of the three outcomes, and the final score fell well short of the 3.26 combined goals we had projected for the match.

What the Result Means

With this draw, Villarreal moves to 9 points from 9 games played (2 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses), while Elche sits on 7 points from 9 games (1 win, 4 draws and 4 losses), with just 2 points separating the two sides in the standings. For Inigo Perez's side, splitting the points feels like a letdown after such territorial dominance; for Martin Anselmi's Elche, taking something away from the Ceramica after spending nearly the entire match on the ropes counts, at the very least, as a point in the bank despite the difficulties.
