Vinícius Banned for Four Games, Will Miss El Clásico Right Before Roma-Real Madrid
The RFEF confirmed the punishment minutes before the 1-1 draw against Roma, on a night when Mbappé also broke a historic Messi record in the Champions League.
There are nights when soccer gets mixed up with the courtroom, and this was one of them. While Roma and Real Madrid traded goals in the first twenty five minutes of matchday two of the 2026-2027 UEFA Champions League league phase at the Stadio Olimpico, news broke in Spain of a suspension that reshapes Madrid's schedule for the coming weeks: four games on the sidelines for Vinícius Júnior.
Let's take it step by step, because plenty happened on the field too. Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma got off to the better start and went ahead with a goal from Marten De Roon in the 20th minute. The play began with a Madrid turnover: Paulo Dybala went down, won back the ball in the opposing half and kicked off the buildup. After a string of passes, the ball reached Matías Soulé, who set up De Roon, and the Dutchman finished with a slight deflection that wrong footed the goalkeeper. 1-0 for the home side.
Roma's joy didn't last long. Just five minutes later, Kylian Mbappé made the most of Madrid's first clear chance to level things up: he received the ball, shifted his body to beat his marker, set himself and fired a shot that took a deflection on its way in. 1-1 at the Olimpico before the half hour mark.
Mbappé's goal also came with a curious statistical footnote: at 27 years and 298 days old, the Frenchman became the youngest player in history to reach 100 Champions League appearances, breaking the record previously held by Lionel Messi, who had hit that mark at 28 years and 84 days.
The Vinícius Ban and Mourinho's Frustration
The real story of the night, though, was brewing hours before kickoff. The Spanish soccer federation's Disciplinary Committee confirmed on Wednesday a four match suspension for Vinícius Júnior over his red card in LaLiga's previous round against Villarreal. According to referee Isidro Díaz's match report, the Brazilian pulled Nathan Saliba's hair "with the ball in play, with the ball not in dispute between them," and then confronted the official aggressively, having to be held back by his own teammates.
The punishment breaks down into two games for violent conduct and two more for his subsequent protests, ruling Vinícius out of Madrid's next league fixtures: the match against Sevilla, El Clásico against Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday the 25th, and the games against Racing de Santander and Valencia. He won't be available again in LaLiga until after the November international break.
What stands out is the timing of the announcement: the ruling came out just minutes before Madrid took the field in Rome, something that didn't sit well at all with José Mourinho. The manager didn't hold back beforehand:
"Ask the Spanish Referees Committee why they released the news about Vini's suspension minutes before he plays an important Champions League match... Real Madrid is a Spanish club, so why release it now?"José Mourinho
The ban only applies to domestic competitions, so Mourinho was able to start Vinícius in Rome, restoring him to the left wing after he'd come off the bench this past Saturday against Villarreal, when the Portuguese coach had opted for Yan Diomande instead. Reports indicate Real Madrid plans to appeal the suspension, viewing it as excessive, though the club had already tried unsuccessfully to overturn the red card before the Competition Committee.
