Vitinha breaks his silence on the Cristiano Ronaldo-Jorge Jesus clash in Portugal

The PSG midfielder says he hopes Cristiano returns to the national team and that the conflict with the coach gets resolved before the matches against Denmark and Wales.

Portugal's locker room looks calm from the outside, but inside there's a knot that nobody has managed to untie just yet. Vitinha, one of the standout names in the Portuguese midfield, opened up on the issue that has the national team on edge: the clash between Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus.

Everything blew up during the last international break. Ronaldo, 41, decided to leave the squad's camp after an argument with Jesus over his lack of playing time. It wasn't just a tactical disagreement: the Al Nassr forward publicly accused his coach of "breaking his word," though he later apologized to his teammates through social media.

Amid all that noise, Vitinha was asked about the situation by TNT Sports right after his Paris Saint-Germain side beat Manchester City 4-2 on the road. He didn't dodge the question.

It was a turbulent international break, full of strong emotions. For my part, I just hope everything gets resolved the best way possible. I hope he [Ronaldo] comes back and that everything gets sorted out. Honestly, that's what we all want. I hope he returns and everything gets fixed.Vitinha

That quote sums up the mood inside the squad pretty well: nobody wants this to drag on, and even less so to lose the national team's all-time leading scorer right as important fixtures approach.

A punishment still pending

Ronaldo, for his part, already made clear in his statement that he's willing to accept whatever punishment the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) decides on, though he insisted his wish remains to wear the national team jersey. The federation handed the captain a provisional suspension, but no final ruling has been announced so far. According to reports, the details of the disciplinary process will stay under wraps until the investigation wraps up.

It's worth remembering just who we're talking about here: Ronaldo has racked up 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, a mark that makes him the national team's all-time leading scorer.

Meanwhile, the national team carried on without him. Vitinha started in all four of Portugal's wins in the Nations League during this break, a run that leaves the team feeling good about what's ahead. Two matches remain in November, against Denmark and Wales, games that will show whether the Ronaldo-Jorge Jesus conflict has found a resolution or whether it keeps shaping the agenda for the Portuguese national team.
