Vitória Guimarães dominate but can't break down stubborn Casa Pia

Twenty nine shots, 17 corners, 74.4% possession and not a single goal to show for it. Vitória Guimarães crashed against the Casa Pia goal time and again, and the match finished 0-0 at the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques, a result that leaves more questions than answers for the home side.

What stands out isn't that Vitória dominated, it's how much they dominated and how little it got them. From the opening whistle they set the pace with crosses into the box and shots from distance, but the visiting goalkeeper and the crossbar turned into their best allies. A crossbar and a drought that won't let up

The second half followed the same script. In the 52nd minute, Gustavo Silva rattled the crossbar with a direct free kick, the play that best sums up Vitória's afternoon: constant chance creation, precision that wouldn't come. The home side kept pushing with Arnel Jakupovic, Óscar Rivas, Oumar Camara and Gonçalo Nogueira all coming on with the same goal in mind, to break the deadlock, without success.

Casa Pia, meanwhile, dug in to survive. With just 7 shots and 191 passes across the whole match, survival was clearly the plan. They had a couple of half chances through Henrique Araújo and Mohamed Salah, but in truth the game was played almost entirely in one half of the field for close to the full 96 minutes it lasted (the referee added 6 minutes at the end of the second half).
