Vozinha wins on debut as Colo Colo blank Union Espanola 3-0 in Copa Chile

All eyes were on one man, and it wasn't any of the goal scorers. Vozinha made his debut between the posts for Colo Colo and got the kind of night every new goalkeeper hopes for: a 3-0 win over Union Espanola that put his team atop Group E in the Copa Chile.

The match was played at the Estadio Nacional, and from the opening whistle it was clear who was in control. Colo Colo dominated possession and dictated the pace, leaving the Cape Verdean keeper to watch much of the first half from a distance. His only real involvement came on a deflected shot that he gathered without any trouble, the kind of play that helps settle debut-night nerves.

There was one scare, though. Vozinha came out to clear a corner, mistimed his run, and came up short, leaving Union Espanola a step away from opening the scoring. He himself appealed for a foul beforehand, but referee Piero Maza waved play on. It was the only moment all night when his name came up for anything other than a positive reason.

A debut with no major scares

In the second half, not much changed. Colo Colo kept control of the game, and Vozinha spent more time talking to his teammates and organizing the back line than actually making saves. That's to be expected for a goalkeeper who just arrived and is still getting to know a defense he hasn't fully settled in with yet.

His toughest save came near the end, when he got down quickly to stop a point-blank shot from Patricio Rubio and deny Union Espanola a consolation goal. It was the closest thing to a real test all night, and he passed it.

With the result already decided, Colo Colo's attack did the rest. Maximiliano Romero, Marcos Bolados, and Felipe Raipan scored the goals that sealed the 3-0 win and, with it, first place in the group stage of the Copa Chile.

Could this debut have gone any better? For a goalkeeper arriving under the weight of expectations from the Chilean and international press, a quiet night with a single hiccup but no consequences is about as good an outcome as he could have asked for. Now comes the work of piling up minutes and settling in fully with a defense that, so far, has given him very little to worry about.
