Willian Pacho shines as PSG edge Brest 1-0 in Ligue 1

A timely clearance, a providential block, and barely a scare at the back all night. That's how Willian Pacho summed up his evening, once again making clear why he's untouchable in PSG's defense. The Parisian side took all three points on the road against Stade Brestois with a tight 1-0 win, a result that moved them through matchday 4 of Ligue 1.

The goal came early and took the nerves out of the match. Ferran Torres opened the scoring in a start to the game where the visitors dominated possession with almost no resistance. With the lead in hand, PSG got to play the way it does best: control the ball and hurt teams in the open spaces.

Pacho, paired with Marquinhos at center back, had a quiet first half. So quiet, in fact, that he even allowed himself to push several yards up the field to help with buildup play alongside Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha, and even got into the box on more than one set piece looking for a header. The goal never came his way, but the intent was there. And whenever he had to drop back, he was never caught out of position.

The other side of the match

Brest came out with more purpose in the second half, pushing higher up the field and causing problems, with Ludovic Ajorque and Pathé Mboup leading the line up front. That's when the Ecuadorian had to drop in and do what he does best: read the play before anyone else. He won his duels in anticipation, cut off passing lanes, and never let the home side find any rhythm.

The moment that will stick with PSG fans came after Warren Zaïre-Emery lost the ball out wide. Mboup broke through one-on-one toward the box, with Matvéi Safónov's goal at his mercy, and that's when Pacho arrived with a near-providential challenge to snuff out the only clear chance Brest had all match.

The numbers back up what was seen on the field: he played the full 90 minutes, completed 96 percent of his passes, won all three of his aerial duels along with both of his ground duels. He also added five recoveries, three clearances, and two interceptions. A flawless outing for the Ecuadorian center back.

With the result, PSG picked up its first win of the domestic campaign, reaching five points and moving up to seventh in the table. There's no rest in sight: next Sunday the capital side travels to face Olympique de Marseille in another edition of Le Classique, with Pacho once again expected to be a key figure at the back.
