Xavi Hernández Named Netherlands Coach, Ending Nearly 50 Years Without a Foreign Boss

It took nearly fifty years for the Netherlands national team to once again hand its bench to someone born outside its borders. That someone is Xavi Hernández, and there's a certain irony to the pick: the Spaniard who helped sink the Dutch themselves in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa is now the man tasked with lifting them back to the top.

The Dutch federation confirmed his arrival this Wednesday. Xavi, 46, takes over from Ronald Koeman, who left the post after the team's exit from the World Cup. The last coach born outside the Netherlands had been Austria's Ernst Happel, back in 1977-78. Since then, nearly five decades of homegrown coaches.

The former midfielder had been available since leaving the Barcelona bench in May 2024, and he now signs a contract that ties him to the national team through the 2030 World Cup. After wrapping up his playing career at Al Sadd in Qatar, Xavi stayed on there to begin his coaching career, from 2019 to 2021, before making the jump to the Barcelona bench. Now he faces a different kind of challenge: rebuilding a national team that fell short at the last World Cup, eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to Morocco on penalties.
